The Cross Country Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival has seen just 22 entries made for its 2026 edition. This was down eight on the previous year.
Nevertheless, the expected names all featured in the initial entries. They include last year’s winner Stumptown, who will likely represent Gavin Cromwell and Keith Donoghue once again over Cheltenham’s banks.
The nine-year-old was last seen making history when taking part in the 2025 Velka Pardubicka. That race, run in Czechia, is the European equivalent of the Grand National over a similar banks course to Cheltenham, showing where Stumptown’s strengths lie. He has been absent since and would arrive at Cheltenham fresh.
He may well take on an in-form rival in the shape of Favori De Champdou. Since Stumptown last ran, Gordon Elliott’s charge has won the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown and carried top-weight to success over this course and distance.
The veteran Latenightpass will attempt to go one better than last yar at the age of 13. However, Mister Coffey, second best of the Brits last year in fifth, has not been entered.
The majority of contenders hail from Irish yards and could well make a sweep of the places. Desertmore House, Final Orders and Vanillier are all cross country winners this term, while J’Arrive De L’Est has threatened twice now at this track for Emmet Mullins.
On the other hand, there is only one entry for France. Karre d’As has also been given an entry in the Mares’ Chase by David Cottin, and boasts three wins in five starts for the yard, all at Grade 3 level.
