Day three of Glorious Goodwood got underway on Thursday, 31st July and GG looks back on the third day results from the Sussex track’s main event of the season.
Nassau Stakes Result – Whirl Drives Through Rain For Easy Success
Driving rain in the build up to the feature race of the day, the Group 1 Nassau Stakes, saw an extremely unusual circumstance as the runners were let go under a flag start rather than from the stalls.
However rare the beginning, the expected result was delivered, as Whirl backed up her Pretty Polly Stakes victory from the Curragh with another top level success, this one coming by five lengths in dominant fashion. She led all the way to easily hold Coronation Stakes heroine Cercene, who nevertheless boosted her profile further in second.
Gordon Stakes Result – Brave Merchant Still On The Up For Haggas
Despite conditions turning almost in the running of the Group 3 Gordon Stakes, Merchant proved ever so brave to drive to glory for Tom Marquand and William Haggas. He overhauled Wimbledon Hawkeye, who looked all over the winner a furlong out, to nod his head down on the line.
Bigger prizes may now await for the three-year-old, with the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe mentioned in the aftermath. The front two ultimately pulled well clear of the third.
The Richmond Stakes result paid a hefty compliment to Ballydoyle’s Gstaad as Coppull, who had been third in the Coventry Stakes won by Aidan O’Brien’s colt, led all the way down the stands side to secure a convincing victory in the Group 2 contest.
Though the far side initially appeared to hold sway, the action unfolded against the rail, with Clive Cox’s charge always in control. Another Ballydoyle runner in Puerto Rico finished second.
Other Glorious Goodwood Results Today
A rare French runner in a British handicap, Best Secret stayed on inexorably strongly to deny Marhaba Ghaiyyath in the opening 1m2f Kincsem handicap. He was also a first winner in the week for owners Wathnan Racing, who had endured a frustrating first two days.
The two races on the straight track immediately after the feature saw victories for Naana’s Sparkle in the Buccellati Handicap (15:45) and Sir Albert in the Phase Eight Nursery (16:20), with the latter racking up a hat-trick. Later in the afternoon, Aylin got off the mark for Karl Burke in the Tatler British EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (16:55) before a finale of shocks, with the front three home returning at 18/1, 18/1 and 25/1. Principality was the horse getting the better of Impartiality and Knights Gold.
