I only like one, 100/1 shot DEISE ABA, this horse has got stamina in abundance highlighted by his nose defeat to Highland Hunter at Sandown. I think this horse has been crying out to go back further than 3 miles. I do think they’ve saved this horse for a crack at a National. He’s always been about stamina, if he takes to the National fences he’s the type to just stay and stay and stay.

The one I’ve bet at a silly price is DOMAINE DE L’ISLE. He’s scrapped in at bottom weight. Well held last time in the Ida, but was never put into the race.

Although he has won on Winter ground he did win twice last spring on better ground so I think there is plenty more to come from him on better going. He also has experience of these fences finishing 4th in the Becher Chase, behind Snow Leopardess no less. Of the others, I’ve also picked out Mighty Thunderer, Dingo Dollar and Freewheelin’ Dylan.

I fancy two here, the first is ENJOY D’ALLEN, running of an ideal mark of 148 – the same mark as One For Arthur and Rule The World. He’s an eight-year-old, four of the last six winners have been that age and he’s coming to the race on the back of three starts which is another positive.

The other is FORTESCUE who has just scrapped in by the skin of his teeth. He comes here on the back of a win which is a positive. He relishes a true stamina test and I don’t think he can be discounted.

8yos have taken four of the last six Grand Nationals and I’m hoping that FIDDLERONTHEROOF can enhance that on Saturday afternoon. He displayed strong staying attributes when runner-up in the Ladbrokes Trophy earlier this season and comes into this a fresh horse after connections sensibly decided to skip the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He’s failed to finish out of the first three in ten starts over fences and therefore the 16/1 available looks more than fair.

Not surprisingly, Irish trained runners have been the ones to follow in recent seasons, largely down to dual National winner Tiger Roll of course. And while the likes of Elliot, Mullins and de Bromhead will be on many people’s radar this weekend, very few will be keeping a close eye on trainer Martin Brassil.

The County Kildare trainer has only previously run three horses in jump racing’s most famous contest, Numbersixvalverde triumphed for the Irish handler back in 2006, whilst eight-year-old Double Seven finished third behind Pineau De Re in 2014. He is clearly a trainer who can ready one for the big occasion and with that being said, LONGHOUSE POET can shine on the biggest stage and provide the trainer with his second Grand National winner.

The eight-year-old is bred to be suited by this weekend’s marathon test and while he is yet to tackle the National fences, he is a sound jumper who travels supremely well in his races. At 16/1, Martin Brassil’s charge is worth supporting and a big run can be expected.

Tiger Roll is the only horse since Mon Mome to win on his second Grand National effort. It just so happens that he also won on his first, but while every other modern National hero has been a debutant, the way ANY SECOND NOW recovered to be third after being knocked right back through the field at the 12th a year ago suggests he could go so much closer with a clear passage.

He may be 7lb worse off this time around, but even with that extra weight, he would have filled the same position in 2021. He is 8lb better off with the winner Minella Times having, to my eye, put up a similar level of performance. He jumps and stays, has excellent recent winning form over a couple of principal rivals and is surely the one to beat.
