Paul Nicholls has confirmed that Threeunderthrufive, one of just six British-trained horses who were guaranteed a run in the Grand National at the current weights, has been ruled out of the contest with sights instead set on the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown later on in April. His absence will ensure that 29 of the 34 spaces in this year’s Aintree feature could be taken by Irish runners should all be declared.
The Grand National was reduced from 40 to 34 runners this year due to improvements for safety purposes. Last year’s renewal saw 26 of the 39 strong field being trained in Ireland, with the growing divide set to be even wider in this year’s race.
Grand National Odds
Threeunderthrufive had been available at a general 33/1 for the Grand National at the time of his defection. The nine-year-old was fourth in the Scottish National last season and had posted solid form throughout this year, finishing runner-up in Grade 3 handicaps at Wincanton and Cheltenham before winning a similar level of contest at Ascot in February.
Despite their numerical inferiority, Great Britain still have the strong favourite for the 2024 race in the shape of defending champion Corach Rambler. After his third-placed in the Cheltenham Gold Cup earlier in March, Lucinda Russell’s charge was cut to a best-priced 5/1 in defence of his crown. Next in the market among British-trained runners is last season’s Scottish National hero Kitty’s Light, though Christian Williams’ eight-year-old needs a further 12 horses to come out before being guaranteed a run.
