BHA Announces Rider Development Pathway - Initiative launched to support jockeys in the UK

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) announced a new “Rider Development Pathway” to begin this week for jockeys of all standards. The proposed plan would see a development of a series of initiatives deigned at supporting jockeys up and down the country in order to promote and improve the quality of jockeyship throughout the sport.

The BHA was launching this project, the first of its kind in terms of an organised strategy outwardly looking at improving the quality of jockeys within the sport, in conjunction with the Horseracing Industry People Board (HIPB) and British Racing School (BRS), insuring equal focus is given to jockeys beginning their careers, right the way through until a rider is on the brink of retirement.

Emphasis will be placed on ensuring there is a clear and concise process for training and career support, highlighting the best routes for progression. The initiative will get underway at the beginning of 2026, with former jockey George Baker the appointed Head Of Coaching.

Another man involved in the development of the Rider Development Pathway is former leading jump jockey Tom Scudamore, who spoke as part of the HIPB on the new program:

“Having come through the system myself, I know how important clear guidance, consistent coaching and the right support are to a rider’s career. The Rider Development Pathway brings everything together into one clear, nationally recognised programme…to strengthen British racing’s reputation for professionalism, welfare and opportunity.”

In time, the Rider Development Pathway is set to expand into other areas within the industry, but will focus primarily on pathways for jockeys when starting out this year.
