Despite being responsible for six of the remaining ten entries, Aidan O’Brien looks unlikely to send out the favourite for the 2024 Irish Derby. Instead, it is Epsom runner-up Ambiente Friendly who heads the market for Ireland’s third Classic of the season at a best price of 5/4. James Fanshawe’s charge cruised through a strongly-run Derby only to be gunned down by a potential superstar in City Of Troy, who is heading to Sandown for the Eclipse according to his trainer.
Derby third Los Angeles is the nominee to propel Aidan O’Brien’s challenge for a record extending 16th win in the race. He has just over three lengths to find with Ambiente Friendly on Epsom running, but was up with a relentless gallop early on and did well to stay on as he did. Turning the tables is a distinct possibility at 6/4.
O’Brien may also send out Grosvenor Square, a well-beaten third in the Chester Vase, but who could well kick on for that effort having been a promising two-year-old. He is narrowly behind Roger Varian’s Matsuri, a wide-margin Leicester winner last time out, with one of the other British-trained entrants at 13/2, with Grosvenor Square at 9/1.
David Menuisier’s Sunway was another talented juvenile, though he is yet to scale those heights at three. He is a 16/1 shot off the back of finishing seventh in the Prix du Jockey Club, and is joined by Ballydoyle third string Agenda at those prices.
The other O’Brien-trained trio are Euphoric (20/1), a pacesetter who was ninth at Epsom, Chief Little Rock (33/1), who blew out at Royal Ascot, and The Euphrates (50/1), fifth in the same race as Chief Little Rock, but with a less progressive overall profile. The field of ten is made up by Ger Lyons’ Keeper’s Heart (66/1), not beaten far behind Los Angeles on their mutual return, but an underachiever in a Leopardstown Listed race latest.
