There was a notable omission from the confirmations for the Lennox Stakes, as Haatem was taken out of the race by trainer Richard Hannon. The Group 2 contest precedes the feature Goodwood Cup on day one of the Glorious Goodwood Festival on Tuesday, 30th July 2024.
As a result, there are 12 runners still in the line-up for the 7f race. Top billing goes to Kinross, the two-time winner of this race and defending champion having wrestled back the crown he first won in 2021. He was most recently only eighth in the July Cup, but will be stepping back up to what is probably his best distance. No horse has ever won the race more than twice.
However, he may not go off favourite as English Oak, who carries the same blue, gold and red colours of Wathnan Racing as Haatem does, currently heads the betting. Ed Walker’s charge has won two handicaps in very comfortable fashion the last twice, the latest being at Royal Ascot and he looks ready for Group races.
Those are not the only famous silks set to be carried in the race, as Godolphin’s royal blue may be sighted aboard Noble Dynasty, who won his first Group race at the July meeting at Newmarket recently. Meanwhile, Audience, a surprise winner of the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes earlier in the season, may carry a penalty here in Cheveley Park’s silks for John & Thady Gosden.
Also still in contention are former Group 1 winner Art Power, Pogo, who was third in the race two years ago, while the three-year-olds are headlined by Jersey Stakes third Chicago Critic, who was just a length behind Haatem in that contest.
