Racehorse training can be an expensive game, with rising fuel costs another consideration for trainers at present. Despite this, however, one Newmarket-based trainer sends the sole horse on a 537-mile round trip to Ffos Las on Tuesday evening. The stable is that of Kevin Philippart De Foy, who heads west with Earth Giant in Ffos Las’s concluding 2m handicap. Kevin Philippart De Foy is 1-1 with his runners at Ffos Las and he aims to continue that unbeaten record with EARTH GIANT in this 2m Class 5 Handicap.
This 4yo ran just the once for James Tate, finishing sixth to the classy John Leeper in a Newcastle novice back in April 2021.
Picked up for 12,000 guineas at the Autumn Sales afterwards, this colt hasn’t finished better than fourth in three starts since joining Kevin Philippart De Foy, but he did shape with a little promise on his handicap debut at Bath last month, staying on from the back of the field to ultimately be beaten just 5l.
Earth Giant is running off a 3lb lower mark here and has the assistance of 5lb claimer Harry Davies in the saddle. He’s less exposed than most of these runners (particularly over staying trips) and it’s of obvious interest that connections make the long journey here for a £4,500 handicap.
