GG tipster Andrew Mount reveals his list of eyecatchers from the past week’s racing. Check them out below, along with an excellent offer from William Hill for new mobile customers of Bet £10 – Get £60.
FANCY MAN (won, 1m4f conditions stakes, Lingfield, Saturday, September 11)
FANCY MAN may have been a short-priced favourite when making all at Lingfield last Saturday but it was still a performance worthy of a serious upgrade as he raced in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail. The Polytrack surface has been riding slower on the inside for some time now, putting pacesetters at a disadvantage.
Bugle Major took off when switched outside him to challenge but he held on by half a length. This win took his record on good to soft/softer turf or Polytrack to 121321 (3-6) and he might be able to follow up in Listed or Group company.
ICONIQUE (sixth, 1m4f fillies’ handicap, Lingfield, Saturday, September 11)
ICONIQUE had shown promise in three maiden/novice contests and was sent off at 9-1 for this Class 5 handicap in which little went right. She recovered from a slow start to press the pace but raced on the inside rail where the Polytrack surface is at its slowest.
She looked very dangerous approaching two out but got into a barging match with Kinderfrau and Louis Steward was forced to stop riding. She came home in her own time in sixth place and can be given another chance. She’s entered at Yarmouth on Thursday (September 16).
KINDERFRAU (fifth, 1m4f fillies’ handicap, Lingfield, Saturday, September 11)
KINDERFRAU had the worst of the draw in stall 1 and could never get off the inside rail. She went for the same gap as Iconique (see above) when laying down her challenge and the inevitable interference cost her any chance.
This was only her second start for Brett Johnson and she’s worth another chance to build on her 33-1 Kempton third on last month’s stable debut. It’s a long way from her Epsom base to Newcastle but her breeding suggests the Tapeta venue will be ideal.

LA PULGA (second, 1m nursery handicap, Doncaster, Saturday, September 11)
The headwind made life incredibly difficult for prominent racers at Doncaster last Saturday and 6-4 second favourite LA PULGA did well to finish second by a neck to Desert Angel after making the running. Roger Charlton’s colt remains open to plenty of improvement over this 1m trip.
LADY ROCKSTAR (second, 1m fillies’ handicap, Thirsk, Monday, September 13)
LADY ROCKSTAR did too much too soon in the first-time blinkers and helped to set the race up for the closers. The 20-1 winner and 9-1 third both came from well off the pace and she did well to hold on for second place. Most will see this as a disappointing effort given her status as the short-priced favourite but I’m happy to give her another chance.
MOJO STAR (second, 1m6.5f Group 1, Doncaster, Saturday, September 11)
St Leger runner-up MOJO STAR deserves extra credit for finishing so close under prominent tactics. He tracked the early pace before taking up the running three out and, though easily brushed aside by Hurricane Lane, it was still a solid effort.
He pulled almost five lengths clear of the early pacesetter Interpretation and it will be interesting to see where connections go next. He has options in the Arc (1m4f), Champion Stakes (1m2f) and Long Distance Cup (2m).
TESTON (fourth, 1m handicap, Doncaster, Saturday, September 11)
I was happy to oppose pace angle TESTON in this 1m handicap but he stayed on the front end longer than I expected given the headwind before fading into a 16-1 fourth of eight. This was his first start following wind surgery and first for eight weeks, suggesting that he’ll be sharper next time on a track kinder to his forcing style.

WHENTHEDEALINSDONE (fifth, 5f143y handicap, Doncaster, Saturday, September 11)
It looked good for backers of the always-prominent WHENTHEDEALINSDONE as Roger Teal’s three-year-old moved up to dispute the lead just over one furlong out. However, the headwind and extra 143 yards of the Portland trip blunted his finishing effort and he had to settle for a two-length fifth of 16 behind runners described by the Racing Post as ‘towards rear’, ‘midfield’, ‘towards rear’ and ‘midfield’.
He’s two from two over a bare 5f since gelded and I still expect him to make his mark in Pattern company over that trip.
YORKINDNESS (fourth, 1m fillies’ novice stakes, Lingfield, Saturday, September 11)
Making the running on the inside rail has rarely been the route to success at Lingfield this summer and 6-4 favourite YORKINDNESS was always in the ‘swamp’. Her fourth place is easily excused and the market could overreact to this performance next time.
ZAMBEZI MAGIC (third, 1m2f handicap, Chester, Saturday, September 11)
ZAMBEZI MAGIC fared best of those to come from off the pace when an 11-1 third in this 1m2f handicap. Bernard Llewellyn’s four-year-old has a modest wins-runs ratio (1-17) but often rewards each-way support when given a big field.
This effort took his record in handicaps of ten or more runners to 21023 (1-5), with the ‘duck egg’ excusable as he was an 80-1 shot in Class 3 company.
