2023 Epsom Derby hero Auguste Rodin is the headline act among 15 confirmations for the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes on Wednesday, 19th June, as he leads the market at a best price of 13/8. The 1m2f contest is one of the feature races of the entire week, with a storied history of producing high class winners.
Auguste Rodin comes into this race off the back of two defeats to start 2024, though has regularly proven capable of bouncing back to his best when least expected. He may well meet his Tattersalls Gold Cup conqueror White Birch, another Irish entry who readily turned the tables from last year’s Derby at the Curragh last time out. He is available at 9/4.
He is unbeaten in three starts this year, though plenty more contenders from the Emerald Isle abound, with Aidan O’Brien also responsible for recent Coronation Cup winner Luxembourg (10/1) as well as 2023 St Leger winner Continuous (25/1) and outsider Hans Andersen (100/1)
John & Thady Gosden won this last year with Mostahdaf and could step Inspiral back up in trip after she could finish only fourth in the Lockinge over 1m; she won over 1m2f in the Breeders’ Cup. She is now as low as 6/1 in places given the opportunity to run here, while Lord North, who won the race all the way back in 2020, is also entered for their team, but trades far bigger at 33/1.
There is also a significant French challenge in the offing for this race. A third of the 15 entries hail from the nation, headed by Champion Stakes third Horizon Dore (8/1), a runner-up at Group 1 level last time out. 2023 Prix De Diane (French Oaks) winner Blue Rose Cen (16/1) is another of their principals, with Zarakem (25/1) and Snobbish (100/1) also in contention with a week to go.
Three more British-trained entries make up the prospective field: Alflaila racked up four wins in a row at one point last season and is available at 10/1, with soft ground expert Royal Rhyme the final entry to mention at 20/1.
