Qatar Goodwood Festival - Our E/W Lucky 15 On Day Three

It has been a tricky Glorious Goodwood for punters so far with winners obliging at 33/1, 25/1, 20/1, 18/1 from the opening two days. GG editor Dan Corbally has taken a look at four at larger prices to watch out for on Thursday in his each-way Lucky 15. They include another Classic placed colt, a debut winner from Alice Haynes, a rapid improver and an over-priced handicap debutante.

FINN’S CHARM

(1.50 Goodwood – 40/1 generally)

Charlie Johnston will likely be pulling his hair out after some disappointing losses and displays so far this week at Goodwood. He’ll be hoping German 2000 Guineas runner-up, Finn’s Charm, can arrest that slide.

He threw in a howler at Ascot last time but has been given a six-week break after that and looks a massive price at 40/1 to right that wrong. He was very impressive on seasonal debut at Musselburgh when scooting away from the front by four-lengths in great fashion from Lion Of War & Captain Winters. This extra two-furlongs on testing ground is an unknown, but his dam was a 1m2f winner and was placed in a Group 3 on soft ground and his sire was a Group 1 winner on soft ground as a juvenile.

HALA EMARAATY

(2.25 Goodwood – 8/1 generally)

A very interesting debut winner from the Alice Haynces yard, Hala Emaraaty followed up in a Novice before performing with credit in Listed contests at Royal Ascot & Sandown. The form of those races is working out quite well, with the two winners in particular Big Evs and Kylian going on to prove they’re above average. Indeed he took the measure of Big Evs on that horse’s debut.

Tom Marquand takes over in the saddle today and neither the new trip or ground hold many fears, having won on soft ground already and looking like rivals were just getting away from him over the 5 furlong trip. With that in mind he could yet show a liking for this new trip and does have some interesting entries over the trip in the near-future.

BALON D’OR

(4.10 Goodwood – 12/1 generally)

One of the more experienced runners in the field and somewhat of a surprise to see his price in this contest. He was a winner on debut before two more podium finishes in a couple of Conditions Stakes at Chester & Epsom respectively; on the latter occasion splitting Bobsleigh and this week’s Vintage Stakes winner, Haatem.

He showed he handled soft conditions when beaten 1½ lengths at Chester. Although he’s come unstuck in two assignments since, they were in pattern company and can be forgiven as a result. He drops to Nurseries now and with Harry Davies 3lbs claim easing his top-weight burden he can be expected to bounce back. The trip is somewhat taken on trust with this his first go at 7F, but if he can show his true form and the potential for some improvement he can outrun his odds.

WILDFELL

(4.45 Goodwood – 33/1 generally)

Turned inside out by the Peter Chapelle-Hyam yard since his switch from Kevin Ryan this season, improving over 2½ stone in the space of four months. He enjoyed four wins in that time and took a crack at Listed level on his most recent start. While he was far from disgraced in that company (beaten 10 lengths), his mark did increase on the back of that but he could yet have more to come in handicaps in spite of that.

He can run keen, as he did on his latest attempt, so regular rider John Egan will need to be at his wiley best to keep him underwraps and produce that telling, long, withering-run from the middle-to-rear of the field that has yielded the last three wins. He hasn’t been tried on testing ground as yet, but this should be no barrier to success given his dam was a Group 1 winner on Soft and two of his four siblings won on soft ground, while his sire was placed at Group 1 level on both Soft and Heavy ground.
