Royal Ascot gets underway later in June. With Group 1 action across the week, we take a look at the favourites for each feature race between Tuesday and Saturday.
Notable Speech – St James’s Palace Stakes (Tuesday, 18th June)
A brilliant winner of the 2000 Guineas on his first start on turf, Notable Speech beat some big names to glory that day with a sparkling turn of foot. The second and third, Richard Hannon’s pair of Rosallion and Haatem, followed up their placings by completing the forecast in the Irish equivalent next time out, while Derby hero City Of Troy could finish only ninth behind Godolphin’s unbeaten star. He has already dealt with Kempton’s right-handed bend, so should have little issue with Ascot, and could yet prove the most exciting horse of this impressive Classic generation.
Passenger – Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (Wednesday, 19th June)
So often Sir Michael Stoute’s charges improve with age, and that looks almost certain to be the case with Passenger. His sire Ulysses was exactly the same type of improver for these connections, and their four-year-old has now claimed back-to-back Group race successes after finishing down the field in last year’s Derby. He was particularly impressive on his reappearance at Chester and Group 1 honours look well within his range.

Mon 20 May 2024Kyprios – Gold Cup (Thursday, 20th June)
Having endured a frustrating, injury-ridden 2023, Kyprios is back in-form and firing ahead of his attempt to reclaim Ascot’s Gold Cup. Both efforts last term saw him finish as the runner-up after he had gone through 2022 unbeaten, but has won on both appearances at a lower level so far this season. We know the trip is no problem for him, nor will be the ground, and there do not look to be any obvious up-and-comers through the ranks to seriously threaten him if on song.
Inisherin – Commonwealth Cup (Friday, 21st June)
Sixth in that immensely strong 2000 Guineas, Inisherin bounced back from that positive run, in which he travelled strongly, to bolt up in Haydocks’ Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes. He was dropping back in trip to 6f for the first time that day, with all of his previous runs over 1m, but coasted clear of the former odds-on favourite for this in Vandeek. The soft ground may have benefited him, but he has run well on a quicker surface too and looks a formidable opponent for all.
Kinross – Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (Saturday, 22nd June)
This race has produced 33/1 and 80/1 winners in the last two years, and Kinross is easily the biggest price of the five favourites analysed here. He is a hugely experienced performer at the age of seven, securing two Group 1 wins in 2022, but has often found one or two good at this level. He looks set to come here fresh too, but this does not look a great renewal and his peak form would likely be enough to win.
