St James's Palace Stakes Runners - Notable Speech And Rosallion Head Field Of Eight

2,000 Guineas hero Notable Speech is one of eight runners for the St James’s Palace Stakes on Tuesday, 18th June. The 1m contest on Ascot’s round course is one of three Group 1s on the opening day of the royal meeting, and the last to take place at 4.25pm.

Notable Speech is unbeaten so far in four starts, all of which have come since the turn of the year over 1m. Three times he won round Kempton’s right-handed 1m track, which is similar to Ascot’s only on the all-weather, before stepping up in tremendous style to land the 2,000 Guineas over Richard Hannon’s Rosallion

That form is working out extremely well, with Rosallion and third-placed Haatem filling the first two positions in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh in May, while Derby winner City Of Troy was ninth and Commonwealth Cup favourite Inisherin was sixth. Both have won in great style since.

Even with City Of Troy heading for other assignments, Aidan O’Brien is likely to be represented by Henry Longfellow, an extremely well-bred son of Dubawi. He was a Group 1-winning juvenile who was only eighth in the French 2,000 Guineas, but could follow the trend of improvement from his yard’s runners for their second starts of the season.

There has been no French winner of the St James’s Palace Stakes since Sendawar 25 years ago, but Darlinghurst could seek to end that barren spell. He beat French Derby runner-up First Look on his return and is on a four-race winning streak.
