STAT ATTACK - The horses to back on Thursday

This column has been among the winners recently and it’s back again as we go on the hunt for big-priced winners and horses who have slipped under the radar. Here are those who could outrun their odds in Britain and Ireland today

PENRHOS (6.00 Chelmsford)

Trainer Charlie Hills has an overall strike-rate of 12 per cent but that nearly trebles to 42 per cent when we focus only on his runners competing for the first time after undergoing a wind operation. Penrhos has recently undergone a procedure to help his breathing and an improved performance can be expected here.

FORT SUMMER (4.55 Southwell)

David Pipe in in superb form of late having trained three winners from his last six runners. Pipe’s overall strike-rate of 13 per cent leaps to 23 per cent when his runners wear a tonguestrap for the first time and Fort Summer wears that particular piece of equipment at Southwell.

ABERFFRAW (5.30 Chelmsford)

This is one strange statistic. William Haggas has a strike-rate of more than 20 per cent with his horses who run within seven days of being declared a non-runner. Aberffraw was taken out of an intended run at this track last week by means of a self-certificate from the trainer. We’ll see what happens if he makes it to the course this time around.
