Stephen Connor received a 14-day suspension after easing up on Royal Hillsborough before the line at Leopardstown on Saturday, a misjudgement that cost the pair victory in the 2m Grade 2 mares’ bumper on day one of the Dublin Racing Festival.
Connor looked to have the Stuart Crawford-trained 9-1 shot in a winning position approaching the final strides, only to take a pull after mistaking the 50-yard marker for the winning post. That moment of hesitation proved decisive: Moonverrin, ridden with urgency by Finian Maguire, kept finding under pressure and nailed Royal Hillsborough by a short head at 20-1 for trainer Martin Hassett. Tiktok Casey finished third, a further 1½ lengths back.
Connor reported to the clerk of the scales that he had glanced at the big screen and believed the 50-yard marker signalled the finish. The stewards imposed a 14-day ban, a sanction that will sting in a week where good bumper rides can reshape a spring book overnight.
The betting markets captured the brutality of it in real time. Betfair showed €11,179 matched at 1.01 during Royal Hillsborough’s apparent winning moment, a figure that underlines how completely the mare had the race in her grasp before her rider’s easing.
Royal Hillsborough Owner measured in defeat
Owner Trevor Campbell struck a notably measured tone with the Racing Post afterwards, framing the error as human rather than malicious, and keeping the focus on the mare’s performance rather than the fallout. “That’s life and stuff like that happens in life sometimes. The mare has run a smashing race and Stevie [Connor] just came in and held his hands up and apologised. Everyone makes mistakes. I hold nothing against him at all,” he said.
Royal Hillsborough did enough on the clock and in the manner of her travel to suggest she belongs at this level, but the record will show a defeat that should have been a win.
