Stewards' Cup Runners - 76 Remain for Handicap of the Week

There remain 76 horses in contention for the big handicap of the week, the Stewards’ Cup, which headlines day five of Glorious Goodwood on Saturday, 3rd August. The 6f sprint showpiece is the top contest which effectively concludes the meeting in West Sussex during its fifth day.

Two former winners of the race are both confirmed to challenge again including defending champion Aberama Gold. The seven-year-old won this a year ago off a 5lb higher mark, while the other previous champion is the now ten-year-old Summerghand. Both he and Aberama Gold are trained by David O’Meara, who has a great history of sending out big handicap winners.

Last year’s runner-up Apollo One is also in contention, with former Royal Ascot winner Saint Lawrence confirmed as well. Top-weight is likely to be Group 3 winner Seven Questions, who scored at that level earlier in the season at Newmarket.

Favouritism is currently being battled out between Wathnan Racing’s Dark Trooper and Archie Watson’s recent Ascot scorer Albasheer, who will be looking for a quick double. The three-year-olds Purosangue and Sergeant Wilko are also well-found in the betting, as they look to follow two-time Group 1 winner Khaadem as winners of this race among their age group.

The weights go all the way down to Michael Attwater’s trio of Cooperation, Concierge and Thismydream, who are the bottom three in the weights overall.
