Just eight runners remain in one of the features of Glorious Goodwood, the Group 1 Sussex Stakes on Wednesday, 31st July. The clear favourite for the contest is Irish 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes hero Rosallion, who is now a shade of odds-on even at best prices at 10/11.
Richard Hannon’s charge dominates the betting for this 1m showpiece, which sees three-year-olds take on the older battalions for the first time at this distance. Rosallion readily overturned form with 2000 Guineas winner Notable Speech at Royal Ascot, but the Godolphin runner has been confirmed here to exact his own revenge on the favourite. He is available at 4/1.
However, second favouritism belongs to Ballydoyle’s Henry Longfellow. Aidan O’Brien runs three, but this regally-bred individual is his clear number one having been beaten just a neck by Rosallion in the St James’s Palace. There may well be more to come from this son of Dubawi and Minding, and he can be backed at 7/2.
The shortest-priced of the older horses is French runner Facteur Cheval, who was second in the race last year to Paddington. He was drawn on the wrong side of the track when only sixth in the Queen Anne Stakes last time, but could be able to perform much better back at this venue. He is at 12/1, while William Haggas’ lightly-raced Maljoom is at 16/1 after his third in the same contest.
Two-time Royal Hunt Cup runner-up Sonny Liston may step up to Group 1 company for the first time if taking up his confirmation here at 33/1, while the other O’Brien pair of River Tiber and Mountain Bear will try not to simply make up the numbers at 50/1 and 100/1 respectively.
