1. BAAEED (William Haggas, Jim Crowley) 1/5

The highest-rated flat horse in training and comes into this unbeaten from eight starts, claiming the Lockinge and Queen Anne this season. Versatile in regards to the ground and showed his liking for this venue when bolting up in a Group 3 at this meeting 12 months ago. Gives weight to some useful sorts here but there’s absolutely no doubt that he’s the one to beat.

2. BATHRAT LEON (Yoshito Yahagi, Ryusei Sakai) 25/1

Japanese raider whose form tailed off after victory in the Group 2 New Zealand Trophy at Nakayama in April 2021. Sent off a 66/1 outsider for the Group 2 Godolphin Mile on dirt at Meydan when last seen but he belied those odds to score, making most of the running under Ryusei Sakai. More is required back up in this grade on turf, and he can only be watched.

3. CHINDIT (Richard Hannon, Pat Dobbs) 18/1

Hardy Wootton Bassett colt who seldom runs a bad race, twice finishing behind Baaeed this season. Appreciated the slight drop in grade when claiming the Group 2 Summer Mile at Ascot last time, once again showing his resolution to get back up in the shadows of the post. Trip/ground are both ideal, but he’s 0-6 at this level and once again has Baaeed to contend with.

4. ORDER OF AUSTRALIA (Aidan O’Brien, Ryan Moore) 9/1

2020 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner who stepped forward on an encouraging Queen Anne reappearance third (just under 6l off Baaeed) when bolting up in the Minstrel Stakes (7f) at the Curragh ten days ago. Certainly won’t be inconvenienced by going back up in trip, but he’s currently 0-7 in European Group 1s, including a fifth in a seemingly weaker renewal of this race last year.

5. ALCOHOL FREE (Andrew Balding, Rob Hornby) 9/1

Impressive winner of this contest last year ahead of 3yos Poetic Flare and Snow Lantern. Not at her best since, before putting up arguably a career-best to land the July Cup over 6f at Newmarket last time out. That made her a Group 1 winner at 2, 3 and 4, whilst going back up to a mile won’t inconvenience, but she was behind Baaeed in the Lockinge and the same fate is anticipated here.

6. ANGEL BLEU (Ralph Beckett, Frankie Dettori) 22/1

Classy juvenile who, a poor Coventry Stakes run aside, had form figures of 3112111, landing the Vintage Stakes at this meeting before claiming back-to-back French Group 1s at the backend of the season. Hasn’t really kicked on at 3, finishing third in the Greenham before being well beaten in the St James’s Palace at Royal Ascot last time. Hard to fancy on the back of that showing and he probably needs softer ground to be seen at his best.

7. MODERN GAMES (Charlie Appleby, William Buick) 16/1

Dubawi colt who landed a controversial running of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf last season, capping off a very progressive juvenile campaign. Continued his form into 2022 with victory in the French 2000 Guineas, and he’s followed that up with credible efforts in the Prix du Jockey Club and Prix Jean Prat, on both occasions shaping as though a mile is indeed his trip. Back racing in Britain for the first time since September and he looks the possible forecast angle.

Verdict

A race which revolves around BAAEED, arguably the best horse seen in Britain since Frankel. This colt hasn’t tasted defeat in eight starts on the track, coming into this on the back of four consecutive Group 1 wins. He showed a liking for Goodwood when bolting up in a Group 3 at this meeting 12 months ago, and it would be a huge shock if he wasn’t leaving on Wednesday afternoon with yet another victory, and Group 1, added to his CV. Godolphin’s Coroebus was a late withdrawal from this assignment but the boys in blue could still supply the second here in Modern Games, who will appreciate getting back over what looks like his optimum trip of a mile. Chindit is an admirably consistent sort and for all that he’s now 0-6 at Group 1 level, he could grab third here in a race lacking any serious strength in depth.

  1. BAAEED
  2. Modern Games
  3. Chindit
