HUKUM – (11:35am Meydan) 6/4

Owen Burrows’s HUKUM was one of the stars of last season, gaining four wins from seven starts, ending the campaign with a 6 1/2l Ascot Group 3 romp.

Although not tried at the top level since finishing fifth in the 2020 St Leger, Group 1s are surely on this 5yos agenda in 2022, and he begins the trail to what could be an Arc de Triomphe bid with a run in the Group 2 Dubai City Of Gold Sponsored By Emirates Skywards on Saturday morning.

Although Hukum concedes race fitness to most of these rivals he has upwards of 3lb in hand on official ratings and his trainer has previously reported that Meydan is “a lovely, galloping track… will suit him” so he may well have been targeted at this race for some time.

GENTLEMAN DE MEE – (3:58pm Navan) 4/7

A €280,000 half-brother to the useful chaser As De Mee, GENTLEMAN DE MEE hasn’t had a whole host of opportunities since joining Willie Mullins yet it seems notable that connections wasted little time hurdling and that appeared to be justified when the 6yo ran out a bloodless 34l winner at Thurles last month.

Although it can be questioned what Gentleman De Mee achieved that day, his previous chase runs behind stablemates Ferny Hollow and Haut En Couleurs reads very well, and it is unlikely that we have seen the best of him just yet.

The JP McManus recruit holds no Cheltenham entries, so this appears to have been a deliberate plan by connections to head to Navan’s Grade 3 Flyingbolt Novice Chase, and he has the right man aboard in Mark Walsh, who is enjoying a terrific season in the saddle.

WITCH HUNTER – (4:19pm Lingfield) 9/4

Richard Hannon and Sean Levey both have the sole runner/ride on Lingfield’s Saturday card, which comes in the shape of WITCH HUNTER.

This Siyouni colt ran well in defeat in some competitive races last season, looking unfortunate not to land a conditions race at Salisbury second time out.

Back from a 142-day absence Witch Hunter justified odds of 4/11F at Wolverhampton on Monday, and that is expected to have done his confidence the world of good. Connections turn him around quickly in Lingfield’s Listed Coral Spring Cup Stakes on Saturday afternoon, which looks particularly interesting, and he could prove a 3yo colt to watch not just this weekend, but throughout the season.
