We’ve had some shock results over the years in jumps racing, let’s have a look at 5 of the biggest:
Douvan’s Defeat
Heading into the 2017 Champion Chase, Douvan was the banker of the Cheltenham Festival … or so we thought. 14 straight wins including two wins at the previous Festivals meant the Willie Mullins’ star went off an incredible 2/9 to win the Champion Chase, but it all started to unravel early on in the race. Special Tiara picked up the pieces as Douvan slumped to a 7th place finish and the fans at Prestbury Park were shocked into silence.
It’s been 10 years since Snoopy Loopy stunned racing with a 33/1 success in the Betfair Chase and looking back now we’re still scratching our heads. It was supposed to be a walk in the park for Kauto Star who was sent off 2/5 favourite, but it was anything but. Peter Bowen’s Snoopy Loopy came into the race off the back of two defeats in the Charlie Hall Chase and the Old Roan, but grabbed the limelight at Haydock Park when ‘King’ Kauto unseated Sam Thomas at the last.
It’s hard to believe that one of the greatest horses of recent years could have gone off 40/1 at the Cheltenham Festival, but that’s exactly what happened with Cue Card in the 2010 Champion Bumper. Coming into the race off just a Fontwell bumper success, Colin Tizzard’s legendary chaser was written off by the betting market but scythed through the pack to win by eight lengths leaving Al Ferof in his wake. And the rest they say is history..
Norton’s Coin
It was supposed to be another crowning moment for ‘Dessie’, but the 1990 Cheltenham Gold Cup ended with surely the biggest shock in Festival history when Norton’s Coin clung on to victory. Owned and trained by Sirrell Griffiths, a Welsh dairy farmer with just three horses, the 100/1 shot shocked the crowd by defeating Toby Tobias and the odds-on favourite Desert Orchid.
Talking of 100/1 pokes winning, who can forget Mon Mome’s victory in the Grand National? Beaten 57 and 42 lengths respectively in his two previous starts, it’s no wonder he was disregarded by punters, but that didn’t stop him storming home by 12 lengths in the 2009 National. In similar vein to other shock winners, Venetia Williams’ star never won another race…
