It’s the 2024 Grand National at Aintree on Saturday afternoon as 34 horses bid for glory in the world’s greatest steeplechase. This year’s race will be part of the Tote Placepot at the Liverpool track on Saturday, and here at GG we look to try and point you in the right direction of landing the potential monster pool
If you’re new to the Tote, you can get £30 in Free Bets when you sign up using the link below and place a £10 bet.
Leg 1: 1.30pm
Leg 1 Selections: (4) West Balboa
A winner of this race 12 months ago, West Balboa will line up off a 6lbs higher mark in the 2024 running, which opens up the Grand National card on Saturday, but Dan Skelton’s charge looks more than capable of delivering the goods again. Last seen finishing sixth at Kempton, the eight-year-old was staying on eye-catchingly well in the closing stages of that contest and a return to Merseyside – where she is unbeaten – should see her go very close.
Leg 2: 1.55pm
Leg 2 Selections: (4) Ile Atlantique
There’s a superb renewal of the Grade 1 Mersey Novices’ Hurdle at 1.55pm and the classy mare Brighterdaysahead will be looking to build on a second placed finish at Cheltenham, but the one to side with Ile Atlantique for Willie Mullins. Third behind stablemates Ballyburn and Jimmy Du Seuil in the Gallagher Novices’ Hurdle last month, Ile Atlantique has been a real model of consistency this season, and while he faces the latter of those two stablemates here he could be the value play.
Leg 3: 2.30pm
Leg 3 Selections: (5) Crebilly
Second in the Plate Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, Crebilly will attempt to go one better in this hugely competitive William Hill Handicap Chase at 2.30pm. He was gallant in defeat behind Shakem Up’arry last month, but shaped like he could be much better than his mark in the low 140s and having been only given a few lbs rise for Saturday’s event then he should be very tough to beat. He will improve for the experience of that Cheltenham run and he looks a real solid option to make it in the frame.
Leg 4: 3.15pm
Leg 4 Selections: (7) Crambo
It’s a pretty mediocre renewal of the Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle with reigning champion Sire Du Berlais one of those towards the head of the betting, while Flooring Porter is another prominent figure. One that massively disappointed in the Stayers’ Hurdle last month was Fergal O’Brien’s Crambo, who finished ninth. He’s much better than that and with his best days ahead of them and with proven form on soft ground he can bounce back with aplomb and run a huge race here.
Leg 5: 4.00pm
Leg 5 Selections: (11) Delta Work, (17) Vanillier
A bumper field of 34 horses will line up for the 2024 Grand National and so in the Tote Placepot it’s wise to throw in a couple of selections and the first of those should be Delta Work. Gordon Elliott’s veteran was third back in 2022, while he was a faller last year, but he’s apparently in terrific form and is a proven stayer.
Second in the race last year, Gavin Cromwell’s Vanillier is capable of going one better and downing Corach Rambler and the grey is sure to be doing all his best work in the closing stages and it’s hard to see him not making the frame in what is a hugely competitive renewal.
Leg 6: 5.00pm
Leg 6 Selections: (3) Found A Fifty
Not out of the first two all season, Found A Fifty was last seen finishing a fine second in the Arkle Challenge Trophy at Cheltenham and Gordon Elliott’s raider can claim victory in the Maghull Novices’ Chase at 5.00pm. He has proven to be one of the top two-milers in Ireland and if he can repeat that run at Prestbury Park then he looks very tough to beat and he can complete the Tote Placepot.
