Tote’s famous Ten to Follow competition is back! The 2021/22 Jumps season promises to be one of the most fascinating of recent times, with the return of fans to the big meetings at Cheltenham and Aintree bringing added interest to the campaign.
Last year’s 2020/21 Jumps season winner picked up over £100k, with the victorious free-to-play league winner winning £5,000.
So, what exactly is the Tote Ten to Follow? Below, we have outlined all of the must-know details for any budding Tote Ten to Follow player.
HOW TO PLAY?
The Tote Ten to Follow is a season-long game which asks players to choose a team of ten horses to form their Ten to Follow stable. Players can name their stables, create their own silks, and choose any combination of ten horses from a list of over 500.
Points are awarded to your horses should they win or place in any race during the 2021/22 Jumps season. These points are calculated by a combination of both the race grade (with higher quality races earning greater points) and the Tote dividend produced at the time of your horse’s victory.
This Tote dividend is important as additional points are awarded by calculating the returns on a £1 each-way bet.
For example, a £1 win at 5.50 and £1 place at 1.20 awards 6.70 points.
Should your selection manage to score at a big price, this will obviously prove beneficial in terms of additional points.

BONUS POINTS/RACES
The race for grade points system in the Tote Ten to Follow competition works as follows; Grade 1 win = 25 points, Grade 2 win = 20 points, Grade 3 win = 15 points and a Listed win = 12 points.
As a result, it is advantageous to select horses that will be seen contesting the best races throughout the 2021/22 Jumps season, and therefore will have a chance of being awarded the maximum number of points.
As well as the point system listed above, the Tote Ten to Follow competition also provides 21 bonus races throughout the season.
Horses that win a bonus race are awarded 25 points, with runners-up given 12 points.
Identifying horses that are likely to target at least one bonus race throughout the Jumps season can be crucial to your chances of maximising points accumulated.

WHAT CAN BE WON?
There is a guaranteed £100,000 pool available for this year’s Tote Ten to Follow and there are also monthly prizes to be won. The free-to-play competition provides players with the chance to win racing related prizes.
The main tournament sees its pool split right down to 500th place, so don’t give up if your stable makes a slow start!
TRANSFER WINDOW & NEW CHANGES
The Tote Ten to Follow provides players with a transfer window to make any stable changes before the big spring meetings at Cheltenham and Aintree. This takes over the seven days preceding the Cheltenham Festival, and during this time the Tote will add in a number of new horses to the list available, which will include some horses fancied to make a splash in the spring Grade 1’s.
The transfer window represents a good opportunity for stables to switch any horses who have been injured, or simply underperformed, with horses who have provided a bigger impact and will be fancied to run well at Cheltenham and/or Aintree.
As well as this, there are also some new changes made by the Tote Ten to Follow for this year’s competition. These include:
- The Angler’s Algo
The Angler’s Algo is an algorithm which helps select the best horses to fill your stable. You can use the algorithm to pick just 1 or 2 selections, or to fill all 10 spaces – the choice is yours. The Angler’s Algo uses information such as targeted bonus races, seasonal ‘bankers’ which will rack up points throughout the season, and wildcard horses when deciding on horses to fill your stable.
- Popularity Calculator
The Popularity Calculator is a homage to fantasy football, where players can see who is proving the most popular in the game. The same principle applies in this year’s Tote Ten to Follow, where horse lists can be sorted by ‘percentage picked’ highlighting the % of stables that a horse is in.
- Horse Performance
Horse lists can also be sorted by the ‘most points last year’ list. This will identify any particularly well performing horses in the 2020/21 season which would have helped stables push towards the top of the leaderboard. As well as this, there is extra information on expected bonus races a horse may participate in, preferred race distances, RPR’s and race types, to help provide you with all the information needed to create your stable.
