After a busy weekend of racing, we pick out a few runners for you to add to your GG Alert stable that sneaked under the radar and could be worth following in the next few weeks.
Representing the same trainer of Benatar (last year’s winner of the 1.50 at Ascot on Saturday) it was no surprise to see Larry run a really encouraging race on his first start chasing. Settled out wide to get a good view of his fences, Larry put in some very impressive leaps to get himself into the race at Ascot before eventually tiring for 4th. If he comes on as expected for that run, a mark of 129 could underestimate this Gary Moore runner next time.
A fourth-placed finish in the Sodexo Handicap Chase at Ascot was an encouraging start to the season for Paul Nicholls’ Adrien Du Pont. A race that was dominated by the race-fit front two, Adrien Du Pont just found his rivals having too much for him after travelling very strongly to the second last. He stayed on nicely again despite a mistake at the last to prove that this handicap mark may not be beyond him in the coming weeks.
A progressive novice hurdler last season, it was no surprise to see Jammin Masters make a promising start to his chasing career at Carlisle on Sunday. In a race where it paid to be up with the pace, Warren Greatrex’s charge deserves a lot of credit for running on into second from the rear, over a trip that was just on the sharp side for him. He’s already proven he acts well with a bit of cut and once the rain arrives in the UK, Jammin Masters will take plenty of stopping in a novice handicap.
It was no surprise to all concerned that Gordon Elliott dominated the Paddy Power Cork Grand National on Sunday with a 1 – 2 finish, but it could have been a lot different had The Gatechecker not make a shuddering error at the very first fence. Michael Hourigan’s eight-year-old has been in great form this Autumn and ran another huge race to finish third here. Held up out the back, The Gatechecker slowly recovered from that mistake at the first to storm home to finish just 2 lengths back in third place. He’s found his calling in these big field staying handicaps and it would be no surprise to see him add another one before the year is out.
