The Grand National retains its place as the most famous horse race run in Great Britain. Aintree’s spectacular contest over 4m2 1/2f and 30 spruce fences remains unlike any other run across the planet. Infamous fences like Becher’s Brook and the Chair are household names even in 2026.
Speaking of 2026, this year’s edition is rapidly approaching. At GG, we have all the information for those wanting to view the big race. We guide you through the date for the 2026 Grand National, what time the race is due to start, and every other key detail as to how you can watch along.
On what date is the 2026 Grand National?
This year’s Grand National is scheduled for Saturday 11 April 2026. This is the weekend after the Easter bank holiday weekend.
It is also the third day of Aintree’s meeting, which begins on Thursday 9 April. Other big races at the meeting include the Aintree Hurdle, Aintree Bowl and Topham Handicap Chase.
What time does the Grand National start?
The Grand National is due off at 4pm. Make sure to be seated with your betting slips by this time, although the race is famous for false starts. You may have time to put the kettle on in the minutes before if you are lucky!
Traditionally, the race is won in a time of just under ten minutes. Nowadays, the winning time is usually closer to nine minutes, as the race has been shortened in recent years.
How can I watch the 2026 Grand National?
If you are not lucky enough to be in attendance at Aintree for the 2026 Grand National, you will still be able to watch along. The race will be live on ITV at 4pm, with all three days at Aintree broadcast on the terrestrial channel.
If you want to watch alternative coverage, the race will also be live on Racing TV. You can also stream via this channel through your chosen bookmaker.
Who is running in the 2026 Grand National?
There will be some returning names famous even to once-a-year bettors in the 2026 Grand National.
The last two winners of the race should be in attendance if fit. I Am Maximus won in 2024, then was second in 2025 to stablemate Nick Rockett. Both were trained by Willie Mullins, as is this year’s joint favourite and last year’s third Grangeclare West.
