Gainful made every yard of the running to win the British EBF Future Stayers Novice Stakes at Nottingham on Wednesday afternoon for Ralph Beckett and Rossa Ryan. Sent off the 5/6 favourite, the daughter of Nathaniel kicked clear in the closing stages to beat Andrew Balding’s Caldo by three lengths in the Class 2 contest over 1m75y.
Gainful makes all at Nottingham
Ryan had the filly in front from the off, and Gainful set a good rhythm on ground that had eased to good to soft after the opener. Caldo, ridden by David Probert, tracked her throughout, and for most of the way the pair had the race between them, with Caldo still holding every chance two furlongs out. Once Ryan asked Gainful to go on just over a furlong out, though, she quickened clear inside the final furlong and kept on strongly to the line.
Experience proved key in a field of five. Gainful and Caldo had both run once before, and they finished first and second ahead of William Haggas’ newcomer Top Scholar, who was a further length and a quarter back in third, with Roger Varian’s debutant Prince Of Petra fourth of the five. Gainful had shaped with promise when third on her debut in a fillies’ novice at Newmarket last month, where she was slowly away but soon in front, and she clearly learned plenty from that run. Caldo, a Juddmonte-owned son of Nathaniel, also stepped forward markedly from a seventh-place finish on his debut at Sandown.
Gainful looks a filly with a bright future over middle distances. This race is part of the Future Stayers series for horses bred to stay, and her attitude in front suggests she will appreciate going further next season.
A race with a strong roll of honour
Recent winners of this Nottingham contest have gone on to bigger things. Liberty Lane won it impressively on his debut for Karl Burke in 2022 before running in the Dante Stakes at York the following spring, and he later landed valuable handicaps including the 2024 Cambridgeshire at Newmarket. Gethin took the 2024 renewal for Owen Burrows on his debut, and he has since won the Listed Magnolia Stakes and run in the Coral-Eclipse, as well as finishing second in the Group 3 Brigadier Gerard and September Stakes this season. Beckett will be hoping Gainful can follow a similar path.
