Gethin purchased by Wathnan Racing & stays with Owen Burrows

Wathnan Racing made a high-profile purchase this week by buying recent Listed winner Gethin. The grey was an impressive scorer at Kempton in the Magnolia Stakes last time out. That made it three wins from five starts in his career to date.

The four-year-old is trained by Owen Burrows. He will remain at Burrows’ yard after the purchase, with the son of Ghaiyyath already possessing an entry in the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. It is possible that will be a mid-season target and one of his first races in the Wathnan silks.

Details of the purchase have not yet been made public. Gethin was originally sold as a yearling for 150,000gns though. With the success he has had so far in five races, it is likely the sum splashed out was significant.

“He’s a really exciting colt” – Richard Brown

Wathnan Racing are among the newest ownerships to make a significant splash in racing. Their blue silks and red cap have been carried to success at both Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood. Gethin may now be the newest member to carry them with distinction. It is clear this deal has been a while in the offing too.

“We’ve admired Gethin from afar ever since he made an impressive debut at Nottingham at two,” said Wathnan’s Racing Advisor Richard Brown, per the Sporting Life.

“He’s got great form around some serious horses at three and showed his wellbeing when winning impressively at Kempton a few weeks ago. He’s got any amount of potential, and is a great credit to his breeders, Martin and Lee Taylor who’ve been a pleasure to deal with, and we’re thrilled he’ll be running in the old gold and peacock blue.”

Summing up the potential Gethin has, Brown is confident his new owners can enjoy the season ahead.

“He’s a really exciting colt and we’re sure the Wathnan team will love racing him.”

Gethin has already emulated half-sibling Global Giant in winning at Listed level. That half-brother was trained by John & Thady Gosden. He won three times in Listed races but never quite making the breakthrough in Group race company. The Eclipse would be a chance to top Global Giant’s achievements.

Burrows himself has had success in recent times with Hukum in Group 1 races. Raaheeb recently won the Classic Trial too and Wathnan evidently have faith he remains the trainer to take Gethin forward.
