Few horses in flat racing draw the eye like Estrange, David O’Meara‘s near-white grey. It is not just her looks which catch the attention of punters though, as the five-year-old will go in search of Group 1 glory this season.
She is already a winner at Listed, Group 3 and Group 2 level. For a mare of her age, she has built up an impressive CV, especially in such a short space of time. Though she enters her five-year-old season this term, she has raced only seven times, meaning there could still be plenty more to come.
Estrange has already gone close to a top level victory too. Her final start at four saw her finish a game second to Kalpana in the Group 1 British Champions Fillies’ & Mares’ Stakes at Ascot. She had also been second in the Yorkshire Oaks to Arc runner-up Minnie Hauk. The good-to-firm ground that day would almost certainly have been against her.
Indeed for a horse who was so impressive early in her career on soft going, she did well on exclusively good ground or quicker in 2025. Now, owners Cheveley Park will be dreaming she can take that last step up the ladder, especially if the rain falls.
“All roads lead back to the Arc” – Cheveley Park
Estrange was declared for the 2025 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, but was forced to miss the race after a dirty scope. Given the prevailing ground at Longchamp in October, it would have been immensely frustrating to miss out.
However, 2026 will continue to present opportunities. The Arc remains the race circled in the calendar though, as Cheveley Park Managing Director Chris Richardson told Racing TV.
“She looks great. She looks more mature and has really filled her frame,” Richardson said. “She has a few options. She has an entry in the Middleton Stakes at York if the ground is soft enough and the Pretty Polly Stakes is also an option for her.”
His comments about the ground being soft will be pertinent to her campaigning. Unlike last term, when she was declared on good going, that is unlikely to be the case this term.
“If the ground is quick she won’t run and we could go back to Haydock, but all roads lead back to the Arc.”
The Arc takes place this year on Sunday 4 October. Estrange is currently available at a best price of 40/1 for the race.
