James Ferguson to quit training at the end of July

Trainer James Ferguson will cease his training operations at the end of July. The Group 1-winning handler will continue for two more months before quitting to take up a role in the bloodstock industry.

Ferguson began training in 2019 as a new face among Newmarket’s famous ranks. His seven years in the sport have brought some tremendous highs, none more so than when claiming his only Group 1 victory in the Grand Criterium de Saint-Cloud in 2021 courtesy of El Bodegon. The on of Kodiac was then second in the Prix du Jockey Club the following season.

Ferguson also trained fine stayer Deauville Legend, who won the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York. He was also fourth when favourite for the Melbourne Cup.

The yard have sent out nine winners so far in 2026. However, a job offer outside of racehorse training has proven too lucrative to refuse. It is unclear yet whether there will be a replacement at his Suffolk base lined up.

“Training has been both a dream and a privilege” – Ferguson

Although his seven-year training career is soon to close, Ferguson clearly looks back fondly on his achievements.

Speaking to the Racing Post, he said: “Training racehorses has been both a dream and a privilege, and I leave with enormous pride in what we’ve achieved over the past seven years. This decision is driven by the opportunity I have been offered. I remain very positive about the sport and I’m looking forward to staying closely involved in the international bloodstock world in a new capacity.”

His training career has involved over 150 winners in a relatively short span. However, he remains excited to continue within the racing world.

“We’ve been fortunate to train some wonderful horses and to enjoy success at every level, both domestically and internationally, from our first runners through to competing at the highest level of the sport.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all my owners, many of whom have supported me from the very beginning of my training career. Your loyalty, friendship and trust have meant an enormous amount to me. I cannot thank you enough for allowing me to train your horses and share so many special moments together.

“I would also like to pay tribute to my team all of whom have played such a vital role throughout my time training. Their hard work, dedication and passion have been the foundation of everything we have achieved. They have made the operation both rewarding and enjoyable, and I am incredibly grateful for their commitment and support.”
