Joel Stakes result: Talk Of New York demolishes rivals

The Group 2 Joel Stakes was turned into a procession by the hugely impressive Talk Of New York, who won comfortably for Charlie Appleby and William Buick.

Sent off a strong odds-on favourite, Talk Of New York had nevertheless met with defeat the last twice, behind Bow Echo and Gstaad at Ascot, then when surprisingly turned over at Glorious Goodwood. However, he put that latest defeat right by pulverising his Group 2 opponents on the Rowley Mile.

Sent in pursuit of the front-running Audience on the near-side group of three, it looked as if William Buick may have picked the wrong channel for much of the race. The far side group had the better early pace, but the stands side proved ideal for Talk Of New York to find his powerful, raking stride.

By the time the Wootton Bassett colt met the Newmarket dip, the race was already in safe keeping. It is likely back into top level company next, as The Lost King and Persica trailed in his wake in second and third respectively.

Godolphin star runs rivals ragged

Despite the small field of seven, there was an early split of opinion among the riders as to where the best part of the track would be. A quartet raced towards the centre, with an intriguing difference between the Godolphin pair: Talk Of New York did not race in the same group as stablemate and outsider Wild Desert.

Where William Buick benefitted was in being able to track a known and capable front-runner in Audience. Although the near-side trio were a length behind their rivals in-running, Buick never looked uncomfortable, breezing up to Audience in the final three furlongs and taking matters into his own hands.

The pair led two furlongs out, but Talk Of New York saw out the remainder of the trip very strongly. Big prizes now await and Appleby spoke glowingly to ITV: “It was confident watching throughout really,” before alluding to a potential tilt at next season’s Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.

The Lost King narrowly overturned previous form with Persica from Haydock recently to fill the minor honours, though neither were remotely a match for the sparkling winner.
