October brings the British Flat season to its conclusion while the jumps programme begins to gather momentum across Britain and Ireland. Newmarket’s Future Champions meeting and Ascot’s British Champions Day lead the Flat action, while Chepstow, Cheltenham, Aintree, Wetherby, Gowran Park and Down Royal provide major early-season National Hunt fixtures.
The dates below are scheduled fixtures. Entries, declarations, race times and sponsorships can change nearer the day.
Saturday 3 October: Sun Chariot and Ascot’s autumn card
Newmarket stages the Sun Chariot Stakes, a Group 1 over a mile for fillies and mares, as its October meeting begins.
Ascot’s card includes the Challenge Cup, one of the autumn’s established heritage handicaps. Redcar also hosts the Listed Two-Year-Old Trophy.
In Ireland, Gowran Park begins its jumps programme with the Grade 2 Danoli Steeplechase.
Sunday 4 October: Curragh autumn Flat racing
The Curragh’s October card includes two Listed contests: the Concorde Stakes and the Brigid’s Pastures Stakes. They form an early marker in the final phase of the Irish turf Flat season.
Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October: Newmarket Future Champions meeting
Newmarket’s two-day Future Champions meeting is one of the key fixtures for two-year-olds.
Friday’s programme is headed by the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile, supported by the Group 2 Challenge Stakes. The Old Rowley Cup is also on the card.
Saturday features the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes, a major seven-furlong race for two-year-olds. The Cesarewitch provides the meeting’s marathon heritage handicap.
Chepstow’s opening jumps fixture runs alongside Newmarket. The Grade 2 Persian War Novices’ Hurdle is the headline contest, with the Welsh Champion Hurdle and the Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle also among the weekend’s notable races.
Ireland’s Naas cards on 10 and 11 October include the Listed Waterford Testimonial Stakes, Garnet Stakes and Bluebell Stakes.
Saturday 17 October: British Champions Day at Ascot
Ascot’s British Champions Day is the defining British Flat fixture of the month. The card contains five Group 1 races:
- British Champions Long Distance Cup
- British Champions Sprint Stakes
- British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes
- Queen Elizabeth II Stakes
- Champion Stakes
The Balmoral Handicap closes the card, which also includes the British Champions Day Two-Year-Old Conditions Stakes.
Sunday 18 October: Leopardstown and the Munster National
Leopardstown’s autumn card includes the Listed Trigo Stakes and Knockaire Stakes, plus the October Handicap.
At Limerick, the Munster National is the principal jumps race. It is a major staying handicap chase in the early Irish National Hunt campaign.
Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October: Cheltenham and Doncaster
Cheltenham’s Showcase meeting signals the return of high-profile racing to the course after the summer. While it is not a Festival fixture, it is an important early-season gathering for the jumps division.
Doncaster’s Futurity Trophy takes centre stage on Saturday 24 October. The Group 1 is the final British Flat Group 1 of the season and a major race for two-year-olds.
Saturday 31 October: Aintree, Wetherby and Down Royal
Aintree’s late-October meeting is expected to feature the Old Roan Chase, a Grade 2 handicap chase that has long been an early autumn highlight.
Wetherby’s season-opening Saturday includes the Grade 2 Charlie Hall Chase, one of the first major British staying chases of the new campaign.
Down Royal closes the month with its two-day meeting. Saturday is headed by the Grade 1 Kauto Star Steeplechase, with the Grade 2 Skymas Steeplechase also on the card.
