Michael Owen and Hugo Palmer were involved in the most expensive purchase on the opening day of the 2026 Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale, with a Chaldean colt changing hands for €210,000 at Fairyhouse.
The Tuesday session produced 15 six-figure lots, four more than on the corresponding opening day in 2025, with 212 of the 250 horses offered finding buyers. Turnover reached €8,841,500, while the average stood at €41,705 and the median at €34,000.
Here are the five most expensive lots from the opening session.
Chaldean colt – €210,000
The sale-topper was Lot 231, a chestnut colt from the first crop of 2,000 Guineas winner Chaldean who was consigned by Rathbarry Stud.
Ed Sackville secured the colt on behalf of Manor House Stables, with trainer Hugo Palmer and former England footballer Michael Owen also involved in the purchase.
The colt is the first foal out of the winning Showcasing mare Amazing Show, who is a sister to Listed-placed sprinter Sam Maximum.
The €210,000 price was the highest recorded at the September Yearling Sale since 2020 and surpassed the €200,000 top price achieved at the 2025 renewal. Manor House Stables and Sackville ended the opening day as the leading buyers after spending €537,000 on five horses.
Sea The Stars filly – €160,000
A daughter of Sea The Stars provided the second-highest price of the session when bloodstock agent Alex Elliott went to €160,000 for Lot 104.
Elliott bought the filly for Anthony Ramsden’s Valmont operation, with the Castledillon Stud-consigned youngster having been bred by the Hanbury family’s Triermore Stud.
She is out of Snigger, an unraced daughter of Dubawi and Group 2 Prix de Sandringham winner Laugh Out Loud.
That makes Snigger a half-sister to US Grade 2 winner Platinum Warrior, while the filly is bred on the Sea The Stars-Dubawi cross that has also produced high-class performers including See The Fire and Map Of Stars.
New Bay colt – €150,000
Sir Mark Prescott and bloodstock agent Oliver St Lawrence combined to secure Lot 205, a New Bay colt offered by Ballylinch Stud, for €150,000.
The colt is out of the stakes-placed Samum mare Abilene and is a half-brother to three winners.
His siblings include unbeaten Montrose Fillies’ Stakes winner Pintara, who was sold to Resolute Bloodstock for 1,800,000gns in December 2025, and Italian Derby runner-up Juan De Montalban.
The pedigree has also received a recent boost through two-year-old San Jose, another of Abilene’s offspring, who won an Ascot maiden on his second start for trainer Brian Meehan.
Native Trail colt – €135,000
Trainer Ken Condon signed for Lot 66, a colt from the first crop of Native Trail, at €135,000.
Consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment, he is the first foal out of Sea Of Style, a winning daughter of Sea The Stars.
Sea Of Style is a sister to Endless Time, who won the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks for Godolphin before finishing runner-up in the Group 1 Prix Vermeille.
Condon signed for the colt under Osborne Lodge Racing, with the youngster purchased for US-based owner Jim Tilton and expected to eventually continue his racing career in America.
Mehmas colt – €125,000
Manor House Stables also featured among the five biggest purchases of the day with Lot 80, a colt by leading sire Mehmas who cost €125,000.
Offered by Beechlane Stables, the colt is a brother to Mehmar, who finished third in the Group 3 Marble Hill Stakes as a two-year-old.
The youngster had previously been purchased for €50,000 at the 2025 Tattersalls Ireland Sapphire Sale before returning to Fairyhouse as a yearling.
His acquisition formed part of the five-horse, €537,000 opening-day spend by the Manor House team, headed by Owen, Palmer and Sackville.
