The Cambridgeshire meeting got underway at Newmarket on Thursday. Matty Sutcliffe pointed viewers towards a winner on day one, picking out Fuel The Jet as one of his three to watch.
He has three more selections for the second day of the festival, including a horse to follow in the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes.
13:15 Newmarket – Betway British EBF Rosemary Stakes (Listed Race) (Fillies & Mares) (Class 1) (3yo+)
This is far from a vintage listed contest and while Applesandpears has something to find on the figures with a few of these, she receives a handy 4lbs allowance and could yet have more improvement in her in the newly equipped cheek-pieces.
The daughter of Havana Grey made an excellent start to her juvenile career at the back end of last Autumn, with form figures of 211.
She initially failed to build on that on seasonal debut, before a staying on third on a fillies handicap at Carlisle proved she retained ability. After two lesser efforts and a 50 day break, she returned in first time cheek-pieces to get up late at Ascot earlier this month, faring best of those to come from rear.
She was ridden in rear throughout there before coming late down the outside, and those patient tactics have often prevailed in this contest. If she can build on that, then she’s entitled to take another step forward and she made just be a filly who comes into herself time of year, as she was last season.
13:50 Newmarket – Princess Royal Stakes (Sponsored By Betway) (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares) (Class 1) (3yo+)
I think the market has this all wrong, and perhaps like the rest of the racing world, hasn’t valued that German Group 1 form that Coedana was sixth in last time out.
Inis Moir has just a listed win to her name this season and has likely been flattered by her placed efforts in Group 1 company given how. Her keenness continues to be an issue, and I don’t particularly value the strength of the three year olds in the market.
Coedana has improved with each run this season, and likely ran to a career best last time out over the shortest trip she’s contested. She was only three lengths behind Hotazhell, who beat the third there, Wimbledon Hawkeye, into second in the Irish Champion Stakes. The second was third to Aventure in Group 1 company next time out and only a head behind Diamond Necklace, and the fifth won Group 2 with ease next time out.
She previously gamely beat Revoir to land a fillies listed race at Pontefract, following on from her third to Estrange at Carlisle who franked that form in the Pretty Polly Stakes. Waardah also franked that form in Group 2 company’s and Naga landed a listed contest at York next time out.
She returns to 1m4f here where her form reads 2231121, and if building on that latest effort she’s entitled to go close here against inferior opposition despite the penalty.
14:25 Newmarket – Betway Rockfel Stakes (Group 2) (Fillies) (Class 1) (2yo)
Spirited Gesture could well prove a class apart for a yard who’ve won this twice of late but she’s closely matched on collateral form with Pensando A Te, who looked a talented sort when opening her account at the second time of asking last time out.
She heavily caught the eye on debut when a rallying second to Speed Of Sound, who had the run of the race up front. Botti’s filly had the disadvantage of inexperience there and was keen in midfield, but once gathering the hang of things she flew home late, clocking the fastest final two furlongs to split subsequent winners.
She then landed a four runner field at Ascot with ease earlier this month under what was largely hands and heels from Silvestre De Sousa, quickening sharply off a slow pace. The second there was previously three lengths behind Spirited Gesture on debut, so there shouldn’t be much between the pair in theory.
She has demonstrated plenty of speed and the Cheveley Park was mentioned subsequently so there is the added task of her staying this stiff seven furlongs, but there is stamina on the damside and all of her best work has been done late on thus far to suggest this trip is within reach.
