Friday’s Newmarket programme has plenty to follow away from the day’s headline contests. This round-up looks at the Listed fillies’ races, the staying test for three-year-olds and the two later races for younger horses. The official going is good, with watering reported.
The early fillies’ races
The Listed Rosemary Stakes opens the card at 1.15pm. Nine fillies and mares are entered over a mile, including the William Haggas-trained Alobayyah, Charlie Johnston’s Arisaig and Marco Botti’s Lizzana. The latter is one of five three-year-olds in the field, with Oisin Murphy booked for James Fanshawe’s Estissa and William Buick riding John and Thady Gosden’s Gilding The Lily.
The Princess Royal Stakes follows at 1.50pm, extending the focus to a mile and a half. David Menuisier has Ryan Moore booked for Inis Mor, one of six three-year-olds against six older rivals. Andrew Balding’s Prizeland, Ralph Beckett’s Venetia and the John and Thady Gosden pair Sunshine Star and Without Prejudice are also among the younger generation, while Francophone, Coedana and Frances Ethel represent established yards in the division.
A staying test for the three-year-olds
The Listed Godolphin Stakes at 3.35pm is restricted to three-year-olds and takes the runners a mile and a half. Roger Varian’s Kokbastau is joined by a Charlie Appleby-trained pair: Castlemont, ridden by Billy Loughnane, and Fortitudine, with William Buick booked. Marco Botti’s Archers Bay, partnered by Ryan Moore, completes the field.
The later two-year-old maiden
The 4.10pm confined maiden for colts and geldings is another seven-furlong race for two-year-olds. William Haggas introduces Quorum with James Doyle riding, while Harry Eustace has two entries, Jeepers Fortune and Soho. Ed Walker’s Sole Ambition has Kieran Shoemark booked, and Andrew Balding is represented by Sterling Cooper.
There are also several horses with little or no racecourse experience in the field. Michael Wigham runs Arcimedes, Heather Main has Clink, and Roger Varian is represented by State Emperor. The race provides one of the meeting’s later opportunities to see a fresh group of juveniles take on horses who already have a run behind them.
The closing handicap
The card closes at 4.45pm with a handicap over just short of a mile and a quarter. John and Thady Gosden’s Go Rimbaud is one of several three-year-olds in the field, alongside George Boughey’s Waterford Castle and Ralph Beckett’s Joulany. The older runners include James Tate’s Flying Frontier, Eve Johnson Houghton’s Silca Bay and Hughie Morrison’s Mythical Bird.
