Saturday’s Newmarket card has three Group races and the Cambridgeshire, but there is plenty else on the programme. This round-up looks at the opening two-year-old nursery, the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes and the two later races after the Cheveley Park, Middle Park and Cambridgeshire have been run.
The opening fillies’ nursery
The card starts at 1.22pm with the British Stallion Studs EBF Jersey Lily Fillies’ Nursery Handicap over seven furlongs. 11 two-year-olds are declared: Richard Hughes’s Al Samsama, partnered by Billy Loughnane, carries 9st 9lb, while Stuart Williams’s Polyxena has Marco Ghiani booked under 9st 6lb.
Ed Walker’s Bymiddaytomorrow is drawn in stall nine with Clifford Lee riding. Ralph Beckett has Sierra Belle and Marsala in the field, with Rossa Ryan and Saffie Osborne respectively booked. Marco Botti is represented by Zephyra and Fire Thunder; Oisin Murphy rides the former and Silvestre De Sousa the latter.
The Royal Lodge Stakes
The Group 2 Tattersalls Online Royal Lodge Stakes at 1.55pm brings together seven colts and geldings over a mile. Charlie Appleby runs First Law and Quest For Stars, with William Buick and Billy Loughnane booked. Karl Burke’s Burning Up has Clifford Lee in the saddle, while Aidan O’Brien sends Haffner, ridden by Ryan Moore.
Charlie Johnston’s Iwasjustsaying is partnered by Jack Mitchell, Andrew Balding’s Quicken Away has Oisin Murphy booked, and Marco Botti’s Rocket Boy is set to be ridden by Marco Ghiani.
The later maiden
The 4.15pm Blandford Bloodstock 25th Anniversary EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes is another seven-furlong contest for two-year-olds. Roger Varian introduces Miss Jane Hadley and Out Late, with Jack Mitchell and Ray Dawson booked. Richard Hughes’s Queen Of The Gulf is another newcomer, partnered by Billy Loughnane.
Among those with previous experience, James Owen runs Lady Jemima and Ozone Friendly, while Andrew Balding’s La Pittura has Oisin Murphy booked after one prior start. Ollie Sangster’s Ruby Sands, placed on her only outing so far, is ridden by Tom Marquand.
The closing handicap
The Hunt Family Fund Handicap closes the meeting at 4.50pm, with 13 runners over seven furlongs. Daniel and Claire Kubler’s Arctic Dawn heads the weights under Billy Loughnane. Andrew Balding’s Five Ways is one of three three-year-olds in the field and has Jason Watson booked, while Saeed bin Suroor’s Sword Maker is partnered by Oisin Murphy.
Roger Varian’s Aqpan, Clive Cox’s Addison Grey and Ed Dunlop’s Superposition are also among the runners. Stuart Williams runs Utmost Good Faith and Sword, while Tom Clover’s Rocking Ends is booked to be ridden by David Egan.
