Questions asked of Gambling Commission by CMSC
The Culture, Media and Sport Committee of the House of Commons have asked a series of the Gambling Commission. Affordability checks will be rolled out to around 0.5% of online punters. These were announced without any government scrutiny, with John Gosden the most significant name in racing to speak out against the announcement. The CMSC have asked the commission to “publish the full dataset” of information used to back up their decision. (Guardian)
Seven go in Group 1 Grand Prix De Paris
Seven horses will contest the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp this evening. The top level prize is exclusive to three-year-olds, with British and Irish interest aplenty. Epsom Derby runner-up Maltese Cross is among the favourites for William Haggas. Also in the race is Aidan O’Brien’s Causeway, who is seeking a sixth straight win. His Royal Ascot success came at the expense of Ancient Egypt, who also runs, as does Queen’s Vase hero Limestone for Joseph O’Brien. Alam, Space Waltz and Varandir represent the home team. Oisin Murphy to ride at Killarney where City Of Dubai impressed on debut
Oisin Murphy is to ride at his home track of Killarney on Tuesday. Murphy grew up in the surrounding area in County Kerry. However, his career as a jockey has largely been based in the UK, with Murphy only having ridden eight winners in his country of birth. He has never ridden at Killarney, but has six rides to add a first winner at the track this evening. Celtic Motif and Elusive Duke are two mounts expected to go off favourite. (Irish Independent)
The meeting at Killarney began on Monday, with City Of Dubai a notable winner on the card. Paddy Twomey’s charge struck on debut in the 1m maiden. Classic winners Anthony Van Dyck and Benvenuto Cellini have won the race since 2018, the latter last season. City Of Dubai was sent off at 8/1 behind heavy odds-on favourite Oklahoma for Aidan O’Brien. The Ballydoyle runner underwhelmed in third though as City Of Dubai continued Twomey’s recent good form. Almeraq team unconcerned by July Cup run
Royal Ascot winning sprinter Almeraq is to continue at the top level later this season. Connections have drawn a line through his disappointing July Cup run when well-backed on Saturday. The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes winner could finish only ninth of 11 behind Comanche Brave in another result to shake up the sprint division. Dry ground and keenness without cover have been blamed with trainer William Haggas targeting the Haydock Sprint Cup next. (Racing TV)
