Racing news today: Grand National reaction & flat season starters - Monday 13 April

I Am Maximus memorably regained his Grand National crown on Saturday. The ten-year-old galloped on relentlessly for a second success in the race, though a surprise underpinned Leopardstown’s opening flat card in Ireland.

Find out more about the racing news today in our Monday round-up.

Grand National reaction: I Am Maximus wins again

I Am Maximus won the 2026 Grand National to become the first horse since Red Rum to regain the title. The ten-year-old gamely clawed back significant ground after the last to storm to glory. His trainer Willie Mullins was winning the race for a fourth time, equalling the most by a trainer in the race. Iroko was second to secure owner JP McManus a one-two, while Johnnywho’s fourth-placed effort ensured McManus had three of the first four, as Jordans split the trio in third. (BBC)

Three horses were treated for ailments in the aftermath, though all walked into a horse ambulance. Toby McCain-Mitchell, the latest member of the McCain family to compete in the race, received a ten-day ban. He was penalised for failing to pull up Top Of The Bill. His mount came down at the final fence when tailed off at the back of the field. (Manchester Evening News)

Leopardstown results: Pierre Bonnard flops in Ballysax Stakes

The first recognised Derby trial took place at Leopardstown on Sunday. However, ante-post Derby favourite Pierre Bonnard disappointed in the Group 3 Ballysax Stakes. Ryan Moore’s mount was down the field when seventh of nine as stablemate Christmas Day claimed the race under Wayne Lordan. The result had an impact on the betting for the Derby, though Pierre Bonnard remains prominent in the market. Trainer Aidan O’Brien says he retains faith in his apparent number one. (Racing Post)

However, there was joy for Ballydoyle earlier on the card. In the Group 3 Priory Belle Stakes over 7f, True Love made a winning return. The three-year-old won under a 3lb penalty, having won the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket last term. The Priory Belle Stakes usually works as a trial for the English or Irish 1000 Guineas. True Love is now third favourite behind Precise and Diamond Necklace for Newmarket. (Racingandsports.com.au)

Constitution Hill faces first Group race on the flat

Looking ahead to the weekend, Constitution Hill will step up in class on the flat on Saturday. The nine-year-old has been the story of 2026 in the world of racing. The former Champion Hurdler has won his first two races on the level with consummate ease. That unbeaten record will be put to the test in the Group 3 John Porter Stakes at Newbury. The 1m4f contest could also contain high-class flat horses Al Aasy and Convergent. (Racing Post)
