Fears are growing within horse racing that Andy Burnham’s new cabinet may impose a blanket ban on gambling advertising. For now, the first significant move Burnham has made regarding racing is that Lisa Nandy remains culture secretary. Broadcasts of horse racing can currently include gambling adverts between breaks. Simon Cox soon to be the new BHA Chair
Having been vacant for four months, the BHA Chair role is set to be filled shortly. According to reports, Simon Cox will soon lead the organisation. The 58-year-old is an owner-breeder, long involved in the sport, and has reportedly beaten two fellow candidates Peter Savill and Minette Batters, to the position. Cox excelled in the brewing industry, becoming president of Molson Coors during 32 years in that business. (Racing Post)
Dr Richard Newland & Jamie Insole split as latter starts solo operation
One of the most prominent training partnerships will split their separate ways next month. Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole have powered a dual-purpose yard for the past two-and-a-half years. It was reported on Monday that the duo would cease their combined operation, which Newland confirmed subsequently. The pair won multiple Group races together in their short partnership, with Witness Stand their flag-bearer on the flat. (Thoroughbred Daily News)
Insole is due to set up a yard of his own from August onwards. He will begin his own operation in Lambourn from September, focusing on flat racing only. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Insole thanked Newland for allowing him to begin his training career in conjunction with the Grand National-winning trainer. Insole went on to say that “further details regarding the new yard…will be announced as soon as everything has been formally agreed.” (Sporting Life)
Ascot expecting 20,000 crowd for King George
The prospect of a truly global King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes is set to draw a bumper crowd to Ascot. Chief executive Nick Smith is anticipating “a generational King George” on Saturday. Defending champion Calandagan could be joined by stablemate and 2024 hero Goliath, while Japanese raiders Masquerade Ball and Wurttemberg, as well as Aidan O’Brien’s Irish Derby hero Benvenuto Cellini, are also in the mix.
