ITV Racing heads to Newmarket and York on Saturday 10 October for eight live races. The Group 1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes and the Club Godolphin Cesarewitch headline day two of the Dubai Future Champions Festival, and York’s card includes the Sky Bet Sprint Trophy.
The Dewhurst has produced more Classic winners than almost any other two-year-old race. We’ve gone back through the last ten runnings of each ITV race to pull out the trends worth knowing before you bet.

Darley Stakes (Group 3) – 1.15pm, Newmarket
The Darley Stakes is a Group 3 over a mile and a furlong on the Rowley Mile, open to horses aged three and older. It is one of the last Pattern races of the British season at the trip and often goes to an improving three-year-old.
- Three-year-olds rule: 7 of the last 10 winners were three-year-olds. Humidity is the only three-year-old in this year’s line-up.
- Favourites: just 3 of the last 10 favourites have won.
- Prices: 9 of the last 10 winners started 8/1 or shorter. Lady Wannabe (28/1, 2020) is the big-priced exception.
- Older horses: only one winner in the last 10 was aged five or older (Highland Avenue, 2023), a hurdle for Haatem and Boiling Point.
- Future stars: Mostahdaf won this in 2021 and went on to land the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and the Juddmonte International in 2023.

The Zetland Stakes is a Group 3 over a mile and a quarter for two-year-olds, one of the longest Pattern races of the season for juveniles. It held Listed status until it was upgraded to Group 3 in 2019, and it is often won by middle-distance types who come into their own as three-year-olds.
- Favourites: 5 of the last 10 favourites have won.
- No shocks: every winner in the last 10 years started 7/1 or shorter.
- Aidan O’Brien has won it 3 times in the last 10 years (Kew Gardens, Norway and Pierre Bonnard). He relies on Drumbeat this year.
- Future stayers: Kew Gardens (2017) won the Grand Prix de Paris and the St Leger the following year. Wings Of Eagles was only 4th in the 2016 Zetland and won the Derby in 2017.

This Class 2 handicap over a mile and a quarter and 56 yards is open to horses aged three and older. The sponsor’s title changes each year, but it has long been York’s big middle-distance handicap on its last Saturday of the season.
- Three-year-olds: they won 5 of the 9 recent runnings open to them, although none has won since 2021.
- Favourites: only 2 of the last 10 favourites have won, though four more finished 2nd.
- Draw: 5 of the last 10 winners came from stalls 1 to 4.
- Defending champion: Grey Cuban won last year at 12/1 for Hugo Palmer and is back to defend his crown off joint top weight.
- Classy winners: Bay Bridge took this in 2021 and won the Champion Stakes at Ascot a year later.
- William Haggas won it with Ilaraab in 2020 and has last year’s Old Rowley Cup winner Yabher and Ancestor in the field.

Water To WineAutumn Stakes (Group 3) – 2.25pm, Newmarket
The Autumn Stakes is a Group 3 over a mile for two-year-olds, run on the Rowley Mile. It often goes to a colt with Classic ambitions, and several recent winners have gone on to Group 1 success the following year.
- Charlie Appleby has won 5 of the last 10 runnings (Ghaiyyath, One Ruler, Coroebus, Silver Knott and Ancient Wisdom). He saddles Al Jabbar this year.
- William Buick has ridden 5 of the last 10 winners and partners Rock Montreal.
- Favourites: 5 of the last 10 have won, and 9 of the last 10 winners started 5/1 or shorter.
- Classic link: Coroebus (2021) won the 2000 Guineas the following May, and Persian King (2018) won the French 2000 Guineas. Aidan O’Brien’s 2024 winner Delacroix went on to win the Eclipse and the Irish Champion Stakes.
- The Flying Scotsman route: last year’s winner Hankelow was beaten in the Listed Flying Scotsman at Doncaster before winning this. Rock Montreal comes the same way after losing by a head.

Rock MontrealDarley Dewhurst Stakes (Group 1) – 3.00pm, Newmarket
The Dewhurst Stakes is a Group 1 over seven furlongs for two-year-old colts and fillies (geldings are not allowed), run on the Rowley Mile. First run in 1875, it is Britain’s most important race for juveniles, and its winner usually heads the betting for the following year’s 2000 Guineas and Derby.
A nursery for Classic winners
Since 1990, 15 Dewhurst winners have gone on to win a Classic the following year:
| Dewhurst | Winner | Classic(s) won next year |
|---|---|---|
| 1990 | Generous | Derby |
| 1991 | Dr Devious | Derby |
| 1992 | Zafonic | 2000 Guineas |
| 1994 | Pennekamp | 2000 Guineas |
| 2001 | Rock Of Gibraltar | 2000 Guineas & Irish 2000 Guineas |
| 2004 | Shamardal | French 2000 Guineas & Prix du Jockey Club |
| 2005 | Sir Percy | Derby |
| 2007 | New Approach | Derby |
| 2010 | Frankel | 2000 Guineas |
| 2012 | Dawn Approach | 2000 Guineas |
| 2016 | Churchill | 2000 Guineas & Irish 2000 Guineas |
| 2020 | St Mark’s Basilica | French 2000 Guineas & Prix du Jockey Club |
| 2021 | Native Trail | Irish 2000 Guineas |
| 2022 | Chaldean | 2000 Guineas |
| 2023 | City Of Troy | Derby |
Frankel is the most famous name on the list, but the last six runnings alone produced St Mark’s Basilica, Native Trail, Chaldean and City Of Troy. Beaten runners can win Classics too: Roderic O’Connor was 2nd to Frankel and won the Irish 2000 Guineas, and Poetic Flare finished 10th in 2020 before winning the 2000 Guineas.

Key Dewhurst trends
- Favourites dominate: 7 of the last 10 winners started favourite, and 6 of those 10 were evens or shorter.
- In form: 8 of the last 10 winners won last time out.
- The routes in: the National Stakes at the Curragh (4) and the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster (3) have supplied 7 of the last 10 winners.
- Aidan O’Brien is the race’s joint-leading trainer with 8 wins, 4 of them in the last 10 years.
- Charlie Appleby has won 3 of the last 7 runnings (Pinatubo, Native Trail and Shadow Of Light).
- Andrew Balding has won 2 of the last 4, with Chaldean and 25/1 shock winner Gewan.
2026 angle: Early favourite Desert Castle ticks plenty of boxes for Appleby and Buick. He is unbeaten in two, comes out of the Champagne Stakes and heads the 2000 Guineas market. The one doubt is experience: City Of Troy in 2023 was the first winner since 2004 with only two previous runs. Main rival Darkness Falls won the Group 1 Golden Fleece at Leopardstown and drops back in trip for Aidan O’Brien.

Darkness FallsSky Bet Sprint Trophy (Heritage Handicap) – 3.17pm, York
The Sprint Trophy is a heritage handicap over six furlongs for horses aged three and older, and one of the most competitive sprint handicaps of the autumn. Fields are big, often 20 or more, so the draw and the weights matter.
- Low draw: 9 of the last 10 winners came from stall 9 or lower, and 8 of them from stalls 2 to 7.
- Weight: 9 of the last 10 winners carried 9-0 or more. Defending champion Binhareer was the exception on 8-11 last year.
- Price: 8 of the last 10 winners started 10/1 or bigger, and only one favourite (jointly) has won.
- Trainers: David O’Meara has won it 3 times, and Kevin Ryan, Richard Fahey and William Haggas twice each. Tim Easterby is 0 from 20 runners over the last 20 years.
- Repeat winners: Gulliver (2019 and 2020) and Strike Red (2022 and 2024) have both won it twice, and Strike Red runs again.

Club Godolphin Cesarewitch (Heritage Handicap) – 3.40pm, Newmarket
The Cesarewitch is a heritage handicap over two and a quarter miles for horses aged three and older, and one of the longest races on the British Flat. First run in 1839, it is the second leg of the famous autumn double with the Cambridgeshire, and it regularly attracts jumpers from leading National Hunt yards.

- Irish raiders: 6 of the last 10 winners were trained in Ireland. Willie Mullins won three in a row from 2018 to 2020, and Emmet Mullins won with The Shunter in 2023.
- Jumpers do well: most recent winners came from yards with a big jumps string. The Shunter had already won at the Cheltenham Festival, and 2021 winner Buzz won the Grade 2 Coral Hurdle a month later.
- Favourites: only 2 of the last 10 have won, and 7 of the last 10 winners started 7/1 or bigger.
- Weight: 9 of the last 10 winners carried 9-2 or less, and 7 carried under 9st. Only Stratum (9-7 in 2019) defied a big weight.
- Ratings: winners were rated 86 to 101, and half were rated 86 to 90.
- Experience: every winner in the last 10 years was aged four or older.
2026 angle: Last year’s winner Beylerbeyi heads the early market for Ian Williams, but he is 10lb higher at 101 and set to carry 9-11. Only Stratum has won off that sort of mark in the last 10 years. 2024 winner Alphonse Le Grande, who won at 33/1, runs again off 87.
