Finals are invariably cagey affairs, with pragmatism often outweighing adventure so as not to make any defining mistakes. It is a shame in a way that these two teams meet here, as PSG have played some dazzling football en route to Munich, knocking out three English teams along their journey through the knockout rounds, while Inter won a truly breathtaking semi-final against Barcelona 7-6 on aggregate.
This is unlikely to be as high-scoring, although both defences have their weaknesses. PSG showed they could shut up shop effectively against Arsenal, though owed plenty to the heroics of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma; Inter have shipped nine in their last four in the Champions League and, despite being the top scorers in Serie A, ceded the league title to Napoli primarily because their defence simply lacked the solidity of the neapolitans.
However, both are likely to prioritise discipline greater than ever in the final and Inter have been the masters of that in the Champions League in recent seasons, with Simone Inzaghi usually finding a way to outwit opponents. Inter were notably quick out the blocks against Barcelona, taking a 2-0 lead in both legs, with PSG holding on against Arsenal in the Parc Des Princes before counterstriking.
This could well be a game which ebbs and flows beyond 90 minutes. Ultimately, bench options might come in crucial, but whereas four of Inter’s six substitutes against Barcelona were aged 30 and above, none of those for PSG across both legs with Arsenal were older than 29. When it comes to fresh legs, PSG’s might just be the fresher.
With this likely to be tight, PSG are likely to be the stronger finishers. That might ultimately play out within 90 minutes, but expect the extra half-hour to go the Parisians way if the final goes further.

He has not been lethal since joining PSG in January, scoring six goals in 24 matches in all competitions, but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia could be in the greatest position to exploit a right-sided frailty in Inter’s back line.
Denzel Dumfries is a terrific outlet from an attacking perspective, but the “back” part of his wing-back role comes far less naturally to the Dutchman. Simone Inzaghi may even opt to use Matteo Darmian at the right side of a five instead, but the former Manchester United full back is 35 years old and Kvaratskhelia will be fired up at the chance of running at either player.
Beyond that, Yann Aurel Bisseck is the least experienced of the centre back options available to Inzaghi and has played at the right side of the three for most of the second half of this season. For all he is a promising player, he is another who Kvaratskhelia would enjoy attacking, and his left-sided role is ideal for him to cut inside and unleash efforts at Yann Sommer’s goal. The Georgian looks likely to be one of the final’s difference makers, and it may well prove to be a goalscoring one.
