Field Of Gold is one of seven horses declared for the 2025 Sussex Stakes, which is the feature race on day two of the Qatar Goodwood Festival on Wednesday 30th July. John & Thady Gosden’s multiple Group 1 winner was last seen romping to victory in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and the galloping grey is now looking to secure another top class success in this all-age 1m showpiece. We take a look at the runners for the contest here.
A shock defeat in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket was followed by an authoritative victory in the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh, where he obliterated the field by nearly four lengths. The son of Kingman then serenely strode to a three-and-a-half length win in the St James’s Palace Stakes to cement his place as the premier three-year-old miler in the UK & Ireland.
Likely to be sent off at short odds for this contest, the class act will face some lively rivals and one of those will be Richard Hannon’s Rosallion, who was last seen finishing second to Docklands in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, and that pair are set to do battle here again. Hannon’s charge has been a regular in the top mile race and is now looking to bag a big pot here, while Harry Eustace’s Docklands will be looking to frank the Ascot form.
Aidan O’Brien has won this race on six occasions and he’s looking to train a seventh win and join the legendary Sir Henry Cecil on that number. The Ballydoyle supremo’s first string will be Henri Matisse, who won the French 2000 Guineas, but was no match for Field Of Gold at Ascot last time out. A change of tactics could well be in the offing with Serengeti in as a potential pacemaker for O’Brien.
An international challenged will be launched as Carl Spackler will take his chance for Ciaron Maher, with Qirat supplemented by Ralph Beckett for this mid-season crackerjack.
