Grand National day at Aintree will captivate the nation on Saturday. The unique race is scheduled for 4pm, with 34 runners going to post.
GG tipster Joe Napier has our Lucky 15 best bets for Saturday, including one tip in the Grand National itself.
Aintree Racing Tips (Saturday 11 April)
It is Grand National day at Aintree on Saturday. All four of our Lucky 15 selections for the day run at the track, including in the famous race itself.
1.20 Aintree – Jeriko Du Reponet (1pt e/w – 18/1)
Back over hurdles, a chance is taken on Jeriko Du Reponet, who has laboured over fences. However, his form at the end of last season over timber was stellar, suggesting he was on a trajectory for the top. Because of his runs over fences, he arrives here fit and well after Cheltenham. His mark here is 8lb higher than when he won at the Punchestown Festival last season. That was a convincing victory though and a mark of 147 could still underestimate him. Still only seven years old, any resumption of his progression over hurdles would see him right in contention.
1.55 Aintree – Masked Man (1pt e/w – 20/1)
Ballyfad may yet still emerge as the best of those to have run in the Turners. At bigger odds though, Masked Man makes plenty of appeal. He is well-bred for jumping, being related to three winners all of whom reached a decent level. His own form so far has been strong too, winning his only point-to-point by 12 lengths. He then won on debut under rules by the same margin, with the runner-up now rated 132 and third winning the next time he completed. He was only second in a Grade 2 over 2m at Haydock in November. However, he has since won a penalty kick race and returns fresh here. Given he won first time out by such a wide margin, he should be fully primed for this. 2m4f looks is best distance for now and a big run is expected.
2.30 Aintree – Brave Fortune (1pt e/w – 7/1)
Irish raider Brave Fortune looks in good shape to deny hot Skelton-trained favourite Mr Hope Street. Two of his three wins over obstacles have come over 2m7f and 3m1f. The latter was over fences last June, since when he has joined Joseph O’Brien. He was well-beaten at Fairyhouse on soft going on his stable debut. Five weeks later though, he was a well-backed handicap favourite at Thurles, going down by less than a length to the horse he usurped in the betting. Kept fresh since, he should be suited by this longer distance. A 9lb rise is harsh, but his trainer could conjure enough improvement.
4.00 Aintree – Grangeclare West (1pt e/w – 10/1)
Willie Mullins can win the Grand National again with Grangeclare West. Even before Nick Rockett was pulled out, the fact Patrick Mullins jumped ship spoke well to his chances. Perhaps even more so was the possibility briefly that Paul Townend may even desert I Am Maximus. The ten-year-old is older than the traditional modern Grand National winner. However, he is the same age as I Am Maximus and possesses as much class at his best. He was unlucky to be third last year after a terrible blunder at the last. Otherwise, his jumping was sound and he is only 3lb higher here. Given he could have won, and has claimed the Bobbyjo Chase since despite ground conditions going against him, the vibes look very good for him to be the Mullins hat-trick scorer.
