ROWLAND WARD – (3.30 Chepstow, 1pt win – 11/1)
ROWLAND WARD raced on the slowest part of the track when fourth of six at Market Rasen last month in what looked a prep run for this valuable Grade 3 handicap hurdle.
That run, his first since May, was probably needed and his three wins have all come on his second start back after a break. His yard has started the peak jumps season well and he shapes as though the step up from two miles will suit.

PLATFORM NINETEEN – 3.35 Newmarket, 1pt each-way – 25/1)
I have several on my shortlist for the Cesarewitch, as you’d expect for a race of this nature, but the main play is PLATFORM NINETEEN (stall 28). He has an excellent strike-rate (five wins from 12 starts) and has improved since stepped up to 2m or further in cheekpieces, recording form figures of 211117153 (5-9).
His patient style was at a disadvantage when fifth of 20 at Glorious Goodwood on his penultimate start and he fared best of the prominent racers when third in a valuable 2m handicap at York’s Ebor meeting last time. He’s regarded as a soft ground performer in some quarters but three of his top four RPRs (Racing Post Ratings) have come on officially good ground and Friday’s race times suggest it will be no quicker than good come post time.
I gave DANCE TO PARIS a good mention in GG’s Weekend Watch preview with my better-turned-out-then-me colleagues Kate Tracey and Daryl Carter, though on reflection her best form is in small fields and this test might not suit.

MARGARET DUMONT – 3.35 Newmarket, 0.5pt each-way – 80/1)
If there’s going to be a massive shock it could come courtesy of MARGARET DUMONT (stall 8), drawn on the opposite side of the track to Platform Nineteen. Hugo Palmer’s filly has proved unsuited to smallish fields in her last two starts and ran a solid 50-1 sixth of 20 at Glorious Goodwood, finishing five lengths and a place behind Platform Nineteen.
She hasn’t had many opportunities in big fields aside from the run – the only other coming in the Northumberland Plate when second of 19. The first-time visor could eke out some improvement and she can plod on into the frame.

ROCK BOY GREY – 7.00 Chelmsford, 1pt win – 11/1)
ROCK BOY GREY won this race 12 months ago, is well drawn and, with a whole host of frontrunners in opposition, looks set to encounter the required strong pace again. He beat only one home on turf last time but that run, his first for ten months, would have been needed.
HIs 6f record on Polytrack reads 15213211 (4-8), with the sole unplaced effort excusable as he raced freely from a poor wide draw (stall 9 of 11) at Kempton (winner and runner-up drawn 1 and 2).
