1.35 Ascot – MARVELLOUS MICK (1pt win – 11/2 bet365, 9-2 William Hill)
Vincenzo has been expensive to follow and while Sam Thomas’ five-race maiden could improve for the recent wind operation I’m happy to take him on at a short price (5-2 best at the time of writing). The interesting one is the Paul Nicholls-trained MARVELLOUS MICK, who will appreciate the drying ground after bombing (fifth of eight) out on heavy going at Chepstow last time. The cheekpieces go on for the first time and his trainer has a solid record with this headgear, especially on runners who finished fourth or worse on their latest start. Since the beginning of 2010, he’s won with 35 of the 144 qualifiers (24.3% strike-rate) for a profit of £51.01 to a £1 level stake at SP. Golden Son, the latest qualifier, won at odds of 10-1 (tipped in this column) at Kempton last month and I’m hopeful that the six-year-old can follow suit.
2.35 Naas – ALANYA (1pt win – 14/1 888Sport, 12/1 Sky Bet)
ALANYA went close on her racecourse debut in France back in January 2022 and caused a 40-1 upset on her first start for Thomas Gibney last summer, defying a 475-day absence to land a 1m2f Curragh handicap by almost five lengths. She failed to add to that win in three subsequent runs but was a big eyecatcher when returned to the Curragh on August 13th, doing best of those ridden patiently when a 12-1 third in Listed company. The five-year-old had two and a half lengths to spare over the next hold-up horse – Joseph O’Brien’s Maxux, who bolted up when 10-1 for a Group 3 contest at Fairyhouse next time. Eighth-placed Curvature, third best of those to come from off the pace, landed a Naas Listed contest a couple of runs later and the patiently-ridden ninth, Aidan O’Brien’s Unless, won a Curragh Group 3 at 14-1 on her next outing. Alanya herself was only tenth of 11 when upped to Group 2 company on her next outing but might have had enough for the season and could be

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Nicky Henderson is out of form and his runners should be avoided at the Cheltenham Festival
In the past few weeks several racing journalists/pundits have voiced the opinion that trainer Nicky Henderson is out of form and that his Cheltenham Festival runners should be treated with a degree of caution. Let’s examine the yard’s recent form to give us some background… Since the beginning of February (until the close of play…
