MAYELF – 1.50 Southwell
MAYLEF was only seventh in a 5f handicap here last time but was poorly drawn in stall 10 of 10 and took the stands’ side route under a patient ride in a race where the pace held up. The step back up to 6f will suit and there’s a good chance of a strong early gallop in this amateur riders’ handicap. The first-time cheekpieces could also help – progeny of his sire Mayson are nine from 45 on the all-weather in this headgear for a profit of £42.25 to a £1 level stake at SP. The expected number of winners was only 4.71 and the latest qualifier, Gowanlad, was narrowly beaten at 28-1 earlier this week.
ARMY OF INDIA – 2.50 Southwell
I took a chance and backed ARMY OF INDIA on his debut for Julie Camacho over course and distance last month and he was far from disgraced in a 50-1 sixth of ten, going down by less than two lengths from a poor draw in stall 9 (the same race as Mayelf, see above). He’s better berthed in stall 1 today and, with loads of early pace among those drawn middle-to-high (stalls 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9), I can see a pace collapse and the low-drawn stalkers coming through to fight out the finish. His trainer shows a profit with handicap runners in a first-time hood (three from 18, +£3.00) and the latest qualifier was third at 80-1 here earlier this week.
EMMPRESSIVE LADY – 3.30 Exeter
EMMPRESSIVE LADY needs her first run of the season and is best right-handed. If we discard her seasonal debuts and left-handed runs her record becomes 1121 (3-4), with the defeat by Molly Ollys Wishes who was incredibly well handicapped off 130 (now rated 15lb higher). She’s missed a few engagement recently but I still want a small interest.
