There’s not a lot I like on Sunday but I’m going to have a small win bet on NOT AVAILABLE, a horse I think can run well in the Grand Annual Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham festival next month.
He’s incredibly consistent, recording form figures of 3212331223114 (4-13), albeit the fourth place came in a four-runner race – at Warwick last time – where he was beaten by almost 19 lengths. He finished second of 13 over 3m1f at Kilbeggan in August on his final start for Henry De Bromhead but has been campaigned exclusively over 2m since joining Matt Sheppard this season.
After his course and distance success in a valuable race in late November his trainer, quoted in the Racing Post, said “I’ve got a thing about slow two-milers and he’s the slowest horse in the world at home, but he’s a two-miler and he won fair and square.” My thinking re: Cheltenham is that chasing a very strong pace at this trip will be just the ticket and, though there’s only seven runners today, there are plenty who like to race up with the pace. The market might have overreacted to his latest effort.
