Tom Tate’s veteran EQUIANO SPRINGS was sent off at 18-1 for his comeback outing at Doncaster late last month – his first start since November – and shaped well in fourth place, seven lengths behind Recall The Show. Steadied at the start, he could never strike a blow behind the all-the-way winner at a venue that is not ideal for him.
He has a cracking record on tracks with stiff uphill finishes, with eight of his nine handicap wins coming at Newcastle or on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket. He’s also run well in defeat at Ascot, Beverley and here Pontefract. He ran another eyecatcher on a flat track last time out, this time finishing a 33-1 fifth of 20 at York, albeit from a favourable draw. Fast ground suits and he runs kindly for Tom Queally.
Magical Morning – Pontefract 4.05 (1pt win – 11/2 bet365, 9/2 generally)
MAGICAL MORNING’s record in June/July/August stands at 1159810200 (4-10) for a profit of £9.13 to a £1 level stake at SP and he can be forgiven his 13-length defeat in the Royal Hunt Cup last time, as he was drawn on the wrong side.
Also, that run came just 12 days after his Doncaster success and may have come too soon. He does seem to have a touch of ‘OXO’ pattern about him nowadays and, since gelded, his record following an unplaced effort reads 1231 (2-4), with the first defeat by a head when 12-1 for a heritage handicap at York and the other when placed at 66-1 in the Balmoral Handicap on Champions Day. He’s worth chancing to bounce back.
