We’re in borderline territory today – it’s the 31st of July – but he’s run well at the Galway festival in late July on more than one previous occasion, including a 28-1 fourth of 18 over the 8.5f trip here on Tuesday. That sort of trip stretches him – his six career wins having come over 7f-7.5f – and the drop to 7f looks ideal. There should be sufficient pace from Lord Dudley and Spanish Tenor to ensure his patient running style is not at a disadvantage.

BABY STEPS has yet to win here but has run well in defeat on numerous occasions, recording form figures of 33323324 (0-8). He looks the only pace in the race and will be hard to kick out of the frame, assuming we’re not dealing with a ‘dead’ rail situation like we were at the last Chester meeting when everything was winning out wide. The four places concession could be vital, so shop around.
If it is a case of all the Chester winners challenging late/wide, then maybe WOTS THE WIFI CODE could be the one. He needs a strong pace to chase and it’s no coincidence that his three wins have come in fields of 14, 11 and 11 runners. He’s failed to stay 1m4f the last twice and has been freshened up after a busy spell. He returns to his optimum trip with the ground in his favour and can also be supported each way.
