The main reason for backing him that day was his good record in July (form figures of 172012274430 after his latest effort) and it’s interesting to see him back over hurdles at his favourite time of year. He’s not raced over jumps for some time but has run well in his three previous attempts, all in the winter of 2019/2020, finishing a 20-1 second of 16, a fourth of 11 (7-2) and a 16-1 third of seven. He has his ground for the first time over jumps and is worth supporting each-way.

VOLATILE ANALYST was well drawn in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot but beat only one home after cutting out the early running on the stands’ side. That took his record in fields of 12 or more runners to 4090 (0-4), compared to figures of 1161 (3-4) in anything smaller.
Those small-field figures improve to 111 (3-3) on turf only, two of them here at Ayr. He gets his small field today and is worth a bet. The downside is the presence of Marie’s Diamond, another who likes to go from the front. He also goes especially well at this time of year but Volatile is more than three times the price and will hopefully track Mark Johnston’s runner rather than get in a fierce battle for the early lead.
BURTONWOOD – (6.15 Beverley, 1pt each-way, 16/1)
BURTONWOOD was drawn on the wrong side when a 25-1 sixth of 14 at Ripon last time, doing second-best of the high draws behind Hard Solution who has placed in all four subsequent starts.
Julie Camacho’s veteran needs a big field/strong pace scenario and it’s no coincidence that six of his last seven wins have come in fields of 11 or more runners. He was a 14-1 second, beaten by a nose, in this race 12 months ago – the last time he ran over course and distance on his preferred fast ground and is 7lb lower this year.
