CHESSMAN (2.50 Naas, 1.5pts each-way 25/1)
First the bad news – top weight CHESSMAN has only scored once from 25 career starts and that came on his racecourse debut back in 2016. However, the veteran has a good record when fresh, recording seasonal debut figures of 1st, 2nd by a neck, 3rd (beaten by three-quarters of a length), 6th of 16 (doing second best of those drawn high) and 4th (14-1, met trouble in running).
He also has the added advantage of being a hold-up performer in a race featuring plenty of pace angles and a forecast headwind. He ran in this race on his comeback in 2019, finishing sixth of 16 from a terrible draw in stall 15 (first four drawn 1, 3, 2 and 5) and looks well berthed in stall 4 this time around.

ACTIVIAL (3.55 Ascot, 2pts win 7/2)
Surprisingly, there are no ten-year-olds in this veterans’ handicap chase and I’m siding with 11-year-old ACTIVIAL for the in-form Tom George yard.
He fared best of those to come from off the pace when a 22-1 third in one of these at Doncaster last time and that form has been boosted by the sixth – Red Infantry – who won the Grimthorpe on his next outing.
Activial is lightly raced for his age and will appreciate the small field. He finished second by a short head on his sole previous course outing and will hopefully be ridden closer to the pace this time.

MID WINSTER (4.50 Doncaster, 1pt each-way 20/1)
Paul Midgley has a good record with his runners on their first start after a wind operation, with four winners from 28 qualifiers (+£14.00 to a £1 level stake at SP) and a further seven finishing second or third.
He had two qualifiers at Newcastle on Friday night and both placed (22-1 and 12-1). MID WINSTER went close over course and distance on her stable debut last September and duly won at Ayr just eight days later. She was well beaten at Pontefract when last seen but the soft ground didn’t suit and she raced towards the outside of the field from a difficult draw in stall 7 (the first five home came from the five lowest draws).
