BELTANE is the outsider of the seven-runner line-up but that looks to be an overreaction to his tenth of 12 at Hamilton last time. He didn’t have a prayer from stall 9, beating only the horses drawn 10 and 11, on a day the low-drawn runners enjoyed a bigger than usual advantage in sprints. Fourth-placed Lethal Levi, first home on the stands’ side, is now rated 10lb higher after placed efforts at York/Newmarket and an impressive win at last week’s July festival. Aaser, fifth from stall 12, was beaten by a neck and a head on his next two starts before a respectable effort behind stablemate Lethal Levi last week. Beltane actually ended up more towards the centre but could never make up the ground and has undergone wind surgery since. Keith Dalgleish is six from 40 with his first-time wind op horses for a profit of £8.83, including a 20-1 winner from three owned by Middleham Park Racing.
THE DUNKIRK LADS – 3.10 Nottingham (2pts win – 11/2 generally)
THE DUNKIRK LADS was sent off as an 11-4 joint-favourite for a 6f Class 4 handicap at Haydock last time despite having the worst of the draw in stall 1 of 8 on a day there was a massive stands’ rail bias. Tim Easterby’s son of Pivotal, who had won easily in a lower grade at Nottingham on his previous outing, raced to his draw down the middle of the track under David Allan and was never able to get across to the faster strip. He did well to stay in contention for as long as he did under a prominent ride before weakening into fifth place, just over five lengths behind the winner. Small fields suit, he gets in well with Duran Fentiman who takes over in the saddle today, and he should get a good tow into the race from Able Kane and Recall The Show.
